Hello everyone, I need some advice on repairing the surface of Billy shelves. The shelves in my apartment are quite worn, with scratches, small chips, and discoloration on the white laminate coating. I would like to know how I can easily and permanently fix these damages myself. Are there special repair kits, paints, or other methods suitable for this? I am also interested in whether these surface repairs can be done well without removing the shelf parts, or if it is really recommended to take them apart for the work. Looking forward to practical tips and firsthand experiences!

For minor scratches, a white furniture touch-up pen or a paint marker from a hardware store works well. For larger areas, I would recommend using repair filler, then sanding and painting afterwards.

Hello, I would recommend thoroughly cleaning the surface before attempting any repairs to ensure no grease or dirt remains. For BILLY shelves, if there is damage to the veneer coating, it is advisable to gently scuff the area with fine sandpaper before applying paint or repair wax to improve adhesion. If there are any chips, a thin layer of wood filler or repair wax can help to even out the surface. Finally, my tip is not to work the surface too much, as the veneer is thin and can crack.

I consider this approach to be misleading. A marker only hides the damage superficially and is not a proper repair. A complete re-covering or replacing the laminate is often a better solution; otherwise, the problems will likely reappear on the shelf within a few weeks. BILLY shelves are affordable enough to seriously consider such solutions.

A proper replacement or a new veneer is often more practical

Thanks for the tip, that sounds interesting. Do you know if IKEA sells replacement veneers for BILLY shelves? That would be my preferred option to professionally renew the surface, but I couldn’t find anything online or in-store. Or does anyone know of independent suppliers or tips on how to replace the veneer there?

The surface of BILLY shelves is usually made of melamine-coated particleboard. Surface repairs are only possible on a cosmetic level because the laminate is firmly bonded to the board. Furniture touch-up markers and paint pens can be used for small scratches but are not suitable for larger damage or chipped areas.

A complete replacement of the laminate is technically very complex and is not offered by IKEA. Professional furniture laminate manufacturers can provide custom laminates, but installation requires experience and special tools (heat gun/heat tools).

For minor damage, I recommend:
1. Cleaning the surface with a mild cleaner.
2. Repairing with wax filler or wood putty, matched to the color tones.
3. Light sanding and, if necessary, repainting with acrylic or repair paint designed for furniture.

Removing the shelf parts makes the work much easier and reduces the chance of errors.
