Hello everyone, I have noticed some minor scratches on the doors of my Billy shelf. The doors are painted and made of particleboard with a thin veneer. I am interested in how to best and most inconspicuously repair such small scratches. I am especially concerned about the BILLY doors because I have read that the material can be somewhat sensitive. Can anyone recommend a reliable method to fix scratches without leaving the surface visibly damaged or uneven? What materials, tools, or tricks would you suggest? Thanks!

Hello poju67,

I’ll give you a step-by-step guide on how to properly repair small scratches on matte BILLY doors:

1. Clean: Use a mild dish sponge and water to clean the door, removing dust and grease. Let it dry completely.

2. Test: First, try the furniture touch-up marker or wax stick on an inconspicuous area to ensure color match.

3. Fill: Carefully apply the furniture marker or wax stick into the scratches using the applicator or a small wooden stick. Avoid using glossy repair products on matte surfaces!

4. Smooth: Gently wipe off excess or, after a short drying time, polish with a soft cloth.

5. Dry: Let it rest for at least 2 hours to allow proper curing.

Common mistakes are applying too much repair material or sanding too aggressively, which can damage the matte film coating. Therefore, work sparingly and, if necessary, repeat the process.

Hope this helps you!

That sounds reasonable. Does IKEA itself offer a recommended repair kit or furniture markers that I should use, or are standard furniture fillers from a hardware store just as suitable?

IKEA does not offer specific repair kits for BILLY doors. However, standard furniture dowels from hardware stores are generally suitable for white melamine-coated surfaces, as long as the color matches exactly and the laminated surface is not damaged. Care must be taken during application to avoid color inconsistencies or streaks.

Alternatively, color-matched wax sticks can be used, which are particularly effective for minor scratches because they mold plastically and do not damage the laminate. For matte surfaces, furniture markers with matte ink are preferable to glossy paint pens.

My recommendation: Always test on an inconspicuous area before wider application and apply very sparingly.

The question is also whether the repair needs to be as visually invisible as possible for you, or if slight differences are acceptable. With very close inspection, minor variations can be seen after any touch-up. For the BILLY door’s coated veneer, aggressive cleaning agents should be avoided to prevent roughening the surface.

If the scratches are truly only superficial, applying a small amount of clear furniture wax can already help significantly improve the appearance.

One more tip from me to keep you motivated 🙂 If you can’t find suitable markers, you can also try working very carefully with a white paint pen from the craft section, especially on matte surfaces. But be careful: always test first in an inconspicuous spot! If you’re patient and take your time, you can make the BILLY doors look almost like new. Good luck! 🙂
