Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought a Billy shelf unit with a laminated surface and would like to care for it in the best possible way without damaging the laminate or leaving unpleasant residues.

My question is: Are there any proven tips or specific care instructions that work particularly well for Billy shelves with laminated surfaces?

I am especially interested in which cleaning products are recommended, whether harsh substances should be avoided, and the best way to remove dust and light dirt without affecting the surface.

I would appreciate any helpful advice or personal experiences!

Hello malcolm55, it is best to use a damp microfiber cloth and mild soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals. This way, the film will remain undamaged.

Hello, malcolm55,

It is best to use only lukewarm water with a few drops of dishwashing liquid for cleaning. It is important to use the cloth well wrung out, not too wet. For tougher dirt, it is better to wipe twice rather than scrub too hard. Cleaning along the direction of the film texture is also advisable to avoid scratches.

I also recommend regularly dusting gently with a soft cloth to prevent abrasion from dirt particles.

Hello malcolm55,

before I explain the care process, a brief note on the surface: The coating on BILLY shelves is a thin plastic layer, usually a type of melamine foil, which protects the particleboard material. It is fairly durable, but because it is plastic, it is also susceptible to mechanical damage and aggressive chemicals.

Detailed care recommendations:

1. Dry cleaning: It is best to start with a soft, dust-attracting microfiber cloth, as dust particles can cause tiny scratches if removed too roughly.

2. Damp cleaning: For dirt, use lukewarm water with a drop of mild, neutral dishwashing detergent. It is important to only slightly dampen the cloth—do not soak it. Too much water can accumulate in the particleboard underneath and cause swelling.

3. No aggressive cleaners: Do not use ammonia- or solvent-based cleaning agents! These can dissolve the coating and make it dull.

4. Clean in the grain direction or wipe evenly: Although the surface is very smooth, working evenly helps avoid streaks and uneven wear.

5. Stain removal: For stubborn stains, such as from felt-tip pens or glue, a gentle melamine sponge might work, but only very carefully and tested first in an inconspicuous area.

A quick question for you: Have you encountered particularly persistent stains? That could help tailor the advice further.

Overall, gentle and regular care preserves the surface best.

Thanks already for the previous answers.

@Nathanaelk, yes, I do have slight coffee stains as well as condensation from plants, which I didn’t want to place directly on the shelf surface but were standing next to it. It seems to me that the film has become slightly dull in some areas.

Did you mean the cleaning sponge should really only be used for spot cleaning? How often can such cleaning be done without damaging the film?

And one more question: Is it advisable to apply some kind of protective treatment after cleaning, or is it better to leave the surface as it is?

I would like to add the following to Nathanaelk’s comments:

1. The laminate finish on BILLY shelves is generally easy to maintain but is sensitive to solvents such as alcohol, acetone, and chlorine-based cleaners.

2. For stains, a specialized plastic cleaner from furniture suppliers can be used, but apply such products sparingly and according to the manufacturer's instructions.

3. Protective treatments like waxes or oils are not recommended for laminated surfaces, as they can damage the laminate or leave unattractive residues.

4. Condensation should be avoided, as standing moisture on the edges of particleboard can cause swelling. Therefore, it is better to use coasters or protective mats.

In short: gentle cleaning and consistent protection against moisture are the most important factors.
