Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought a Billy shelf unit with a laminated surface and would like to care for it in the best possible way without damaging the laminate or leaving unpleasant residues.

My question is: Are there any proven tips or specific care instructions that work particularly well for Billy shelves with laminated surfaces?

I am especially interested in which cleaning products are recommended, whether harsh substances should be avoided, and the best way to remove dust and light dirt without affecting the surface.

I would appreciate any helpful advice or personal experiences!

Good morning everyone,

I’m summarizing the current status for myself to make sure I’m applying everything correctly:

- Only wipe with a damp cloth using lukewarm water and a few drops of neutral detergent
- No vinegar, alcohol-based, solvent-based, or wax-containing cleaners
- After cleaning, dry by buffing with a microfiber cloth
- For stubborn stains, cautiously use a plastic cleaner after testing first
- Always avoid moisture on the shelf, especially at the edges

Am I on the right track here, or is there anything essential I should still keep in mind?

Thanks again for the support!

This is a very good summary and perfectly captures the main points of maintenance.

It is also important to avoid direct sunlight whenever possible to prevent premature fading of the vinyl wrap. Abrupt temperature changes (e.g., very hot objects or intense heat sources nearby) should also be avoided.

Other than that, the care methods you mentioned are completely sufficient.

As an addition:

If you are concerned about actual scratches, there are also vinyl polish products that can fill in minor micro-scratches and restore shine. However, these should be used very carefully and only occasionally to avoid stressing the vinyl further.

Most users manage well with regular gentle cleaning without any problems.

Great, thanks for the final tips and the note about sun exposure!

I will now start with gentle maintenance and carefully use plastic cleaner if necessary.

If I run into any problems or need advice on polishing, I’ll be happy to reach out again.

Many thanks to everyone for the helpful and detailed responses!

Glad to help! If you ask about intensive care: for such applications, it’s best to use very fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 1500+) combined with a professional plastic polish.

However, this should only be used for clearly visible wear—usually, this is not necessary for everyday use.

Otherwise, I wish you good luck with your shelf!
