Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I bought the Billy shelf unit from IKEA, which has a painted finish. Now I’m wondering which products are really recommended for maintaining this kind of paint. Specifically, I want to know how to protect the surface long-term and keep its nice shine without damaging the paint or leaving unsightly streaks.
I have heard about wax, special furniture polishes, and mild cleaners, but I’m unsure which products are actually suitable and what I should avoid. I’m also curious whether home remedies can be a valid alternative or if I absolutely need to use a specialized paint care product.
Do you have any experience caring for BILLY shelves or painted furniture in general? Are there particular brands you would recommend? Any advice that helps preserve the surface with minimal effort and risk is welcome.
Thank you in advance!

Additionally, I would like to point out that common furniture polishes sometimes contain ingredients that become sticky over time and attract dust. Anyone who values a clean surface should therefore use a combination of cleaning and care products that keep the protective film breathable.
I agree with this, and I also recommend testing the product on an inconspicuous area before the first use to see how it reacts with the finish. Especially with inexpensive BILLY shelves made of particleboard, the wrong care products can cause the finish to become rough or discolored.
In summary: prefer products that are labeled as suitable for painted or laminated furniture and that do not contain harsh solvents.

It is important to apply the wax thinly and polish it well.

Which products are recommended for maintaining the finish of the BILLY bookshelf?I think the question focuses too much on a specific product and not enough on the type of surface. The BILLY bookshelf usually has a thin clear lacquer on particleboard.
To ensure that such coatings not only have a superficial shine but are also durable, the most important factor is mechanical care. This means minimizing rubbing, avoiding abrasion, and regularly removing dust.

test on an inconspicuous spot before first useIn my opinion, this is not optional but mandatory! Especially with inexpensive shelves, caution is worthwhile.
Maintenance products should ideally be pH-neutral and free of aggressive solvents. Whether to use wax or polish depends on personal preference for shine, but a neutral cleaner combined with occasional, sparing care is often sufficient.

In rooms with high humidity or smoke, care should be done more frequently and carefully. Otherwise, the finish can deteriorate faster due to environmental factors.
The best finish care is always a combination of cleaning, protection, and gentle treatment. I do not recommend products containing silicones or wax if short-term appearance is the only priority. The focus should be on sustainable protection and value preservation.
For BILLY, a mild cleaner suitable for finished surfaces is generally sufficient, along with an occasional thin layer of wax, for example once per quarter.
One last little tip from me:
To keep the paint looking fresh, after cleaning you can use a dry cloth to polish it again. This will remove fine residues and smooth the surface. This is especially important for light-reflective surfaces like painted BILLY.
And don’t worry, with the right product and a bit of patience, maintenance can even be enjoyable 🙂 Good luck!
