LISDRA6Hello everyone,
I have some particleboard shelves from Billy units that I want to clean thoroughly without damaging the surface or edges. My main concern is how to best remove dust, light stains, and possibly sticky spots without causing the surface to become dull or swollen. Which cleaning products are particularly suitable for painted or melamine-coated shelves, and how should I use them most effectively (e.g., moisture level of cloths, cleaning frequency)? I would really appreciate specific tips and experiences with different products or methods that protect the material while ensuring a thorough cleaning. Thanks in advance!

Hello LISDRA6,
first of all, an important point: Billy shelves made of particleboard with melamine coating or lacquer should never be cleaned with too much water, as this can cause swelling. It is best to use a well-wrung, damp microfiber cloth to remove dust and light dirt.
For tougher stains, a mild cleaning agent works well, such as a pH-neutral dish detergent diluted in water. Make sure to wring the cloth out thoroughly again and wipe the surface dry afterward with a dry cloth. Avoid aggressive cleaners, abrasives, or anything containing alcohol, as they can damage the surface.
Regular dusting with a dry microfiber cloth is usually sufficient to remove dust, which is the basis of effective care for office or home furniture.
If you have questions about specific stains, feel free to describe them in more detail!

For reference:
The Billi shelves are usually made of particleboard with a melamine coating, which is fairly durable but sensitive to moisture. Therefore, it is advisable to use only slightly damp cloths or special furniture care sprays designed for laminate and plastic surfaces.
Concentrated cleaning agents, abrasives, or waxes are not suitable and can cause discoloration or damage.
For effective cleaning, you can follow this procedure:
- Dust dry with a microfiber cloth
- Wipe with a lightly damp cloth using diluted mild dish soap
- Avoid direct contact with water
- Wipe again with a dry cloth
This method protects the surface and keeps it looking good over time.

I would like to add that for thorough yet gentle cleaning of the Billy shelves, the water temperature is also important. Lukewarm water enhances cleaning effectiveness, but hot water should be avoided as it can damage the melamine-coated surface.
Another tip: For sticky stains, you can dilute one tablespoon of vinegar essence in one liter of water, which usually removes dirt very well. However, you should wipe again with a damp, clean cloth afterward to remove any vinegar residue, as this can otherwise harm the surface.
In summary:
- Use lukewarm water
- Mild dish soap solution or vinegar-water for stains
- Do not wipe with excessive water
- Wipe again shortly afterward
This will help keep the shelves looking good and functional for longer.

Mine usually looks either dry or quite wet, so I’m always unsure if I’m using too much or too little moisture. Does anyone here have a kind of “feel” or a rule of thumb for what counts as “damp enough”?
Also: Can I dilute dish soap in a regular household sponge and use that, or is a microfiber cloth important here because of its surface texture?

Avoid direct contact with waterHello everyone,
perhaps I can add from my own experience that I once damaged a Billy bookshelf shelf by wiping it too wet. The edges swelled up and it didn’t look good. Since then, I always clean with a well-wrung microfiber cloth and follow the rule: “The cloth should feel like a damp sponge, but not drip.” I also make sure to dust dry first.
If there are stains, I try using just one drop of dish soap on the damp cloth—no more. That’s more than enough.
I hope this helps!
