Hello everyone,

I own several BILLY shelves from IKEA and want to significantly extend their lifespan. My question is: What methods or maintenance tips would you recommend to keep BILLY shelves stable and visually appealing for many years? I am especially interested in load-related factors, environmental influences, measures to prevent warping, and whether it makes sense to treat the material in any other way.

Are there any experiences regarding the best way to secure the shelf joints and whether it is advisable to reinforce screws or connection points afterward?

Thank you in advance for your insights and tips!

Hello keoro,

I think your question is very well formulated, and I can provide you with some detailed advice from a technical perspective.

As you know, BILLY shelves are mainly made of particleboard with a melamine coating. A main issue is their sensitivity to moisture. To extend their lifespan, I strongly recommend avoiding moisture as much as possible. This means not placing the shelf in damp basements or near heat sources.

To prevent warping, especially on fully loaded shelves, I suggest not exceeding the load capacity and adding additional center supports for longer shelves. IKEA itself offers so-called shelf supports that can be attached as supplements.

Adding extra screws at the joints often makes sense, but keep in mind: use screws of the correct length and thickness to increase stability without damaging the wood.

You can also treat the furniture surfaces with furniture oil or wax on vulnerable areas. Although the effect is limited for melamine, edges and exposed cut surfaces will at least benefit.

I would be interested to know in what environment your BILLY shelves are placed and how they are used. That way, I can offer you more specific help.

Thank you for the details! The shelves are in my dry living room. There is minimal direct sunlight, but a radiator is located relatively close, though not directly adjacent, and there are no heating lamps or similar devices nearby. The primary use is for storing books and DVDs, so the load on the shelves is fairly evenly distributed.

I have also noticed that the shelves tend to bow a bit, especially when fully loaded. I’m familiar with middle supports on other shelving systems, but not specifically for BILLY. How and where is it best to install them? Is there a special fitting, or do you need to drill?

A useful addition to leebi7’s response: The lifespan of BILLY shelves is largely determined by adhering to the maximum load capacity per shelf. According to IKEA’s information, this is usually 20 kg (44 lbs) per shelf, which is an important guideline for books.

To reinforce the shelves, metal shelf supports can be used, which hook between the shelf and the side panel. These are often available at hardware stores and do not require major structural modifications.

The distance of the shelves from the back panel should not be overlooked either: In BILLY models, the back panel is slim, which can make the unit more prone to twisting. Therefore, I recommend stabilizing corner joints with brackets or additional strips in problematic areas.

Proximity to radiators is generally not an issue, as long as there is no direct heat exposure or air circulation causing excessive drying. This can lead to deformation due to shrinking of the particleboard.

Finally, here is a tip: Regularly check the fasteners and tighten them if necessary – this is a quick and effective way to address weak points.

I really like that so many tips have already been shared! 🙂

Here’s a simple additional tip from me: it’s better to regularly dust the shelves and make sure that heavy objects don’t stay stuck in one spot for too long. Especially with books, which often stay in the same position for years, dust and moisture can accumulate and damage the boards.

Oh, and sometimes even small rubber pads under the feet can help prevent moisture from the floor from affecting the underside of the shelves directly. You might be surprised what a little gap can prevent.

Kudos for careful handling—then BILLY can easily last well over a decade! ;-)

Hello keoro,

I’d like to briefly address the topic of installation: A clean, professional assembly is crucial for the durability of BILLY shelves. It often happens that shelves are not perfectly level or screws are not tightened correctly.

It’s best to use a cordless drill with a torque limiter to avoid damaging the material. It’s also recommended to fix the shelves to the wall – this prevents tipping and reduces stress on the floor connections.

Have you already secured your shelves to the wall? If not, please do so; this is truly one of the most effective measures to extend their lifespan and prevent accidental tipping.
