Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a Billy bookshelf from Ikea and unfortunately found that some parts were missing. Specifically, the middle shelves and a few screws were not included in the package. My question is: What is the best way to handle missing parts for Billy bookshelves? Are there official methods through Ikea to obtain missing individual components, or do you have other experiences or tips for getting the missing pieces as easily as possible?

A brief explanation upfront: This is a standard Billy bookshelf measuring 80x28x202 cm (31½x11×79½ inches), and I made sure to order the complete set – but obviously, something was still missing.

I look forward to your helpful responses!

That's great that you reached out here right away! 🙂

At Ikea, you can actually order missing parts directly if they are missing from the package. Just find out the shelf number and the exact parts, then request them at your nearest Ikea store or through their website.

I've done this several times, and usually, they send the parts free of charge or you can simply pick them up in person.

Don't get discouraged – you can definitely manage this!

Have your purchase receipt ready, check the spare parts section on the Ikea website, and order parts directly from there.

Hello Leron3,

you have described the problem well. I would add that you should first check whether you have thoroughly searched all compartments when unpacking and if any parts might be hidden inside other packaging. If parts are definitely missing, it helps to contact Ikea with the item number and exact description or to go directly to customer service.

Often, the staff there are very helpful and will send missing screws or boards. If you no longer have the receipt, a photo of the packaging might help when contacting service.

Do you still have the item number of the shelving unit?

Yes, thanks for asking! The item number is 102.821.56. I actually checked, and the missing shelves are not anywhere in the box or in any other packaging. Screws are definitely not included either; I will take another closer look.

Has anyone ever been able to reorder parts without providing the original receipt? Unfortunately, I no longer have the original proof of purchase. I assume the shelves were not ordered through the customer account. Thanks for your feedback!

Regarding your issue with missing parts for the Billy shelves:

Ikea offers a fairly customer-friendly spare parts service, even without a receipt. However, the level of flexibility varies depending on the local store. I recommend the following preliminary steps:

1. Write down as precisely as possible which parts are missing. For example, "2 shelves 80cm x 28cm (31.5 inches x 11 inches)" and the type of screws (e.g., "4x 8mm (0.3 inch) wood screws").
2. If possible, download the assembly instructions as a PDF from Ikea’s website. This will provide all part names and order numbers for the individual components.
3. Contact Ikea customer service by phone or email with the exact article number of the shelving unit, the missing parts, and a brief explanation that a part was missing from the delivery.
4. The warranty or spare parts service usually covers at least one year, so you should have a good chance of getting replacements.

A small tip: When calling, check the store’s opening hours and peak times to avoid long wait times. If you have a smaller Ikea store nearby, some locations also offer direct spare parts sales.

Have you already tried Ikea’s chat service? It often provides quicker assistance.
