Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into a specific question regarding the IKEA Billy bookshelf: Are there any special screws or fasteners that should be used for increased load on the shelf, instead of the standard screws included in the basic package?

Specifically, I want to load the shelf more heavily (e.g., with more books or heavy decorative items) and wonder whether the original mounting hardware can withstand the increased stress over time or if it is advisable to use reinforced screws, wall plugs, or other connectors.

My question concerns not only the wall fixing but also all the screws that connect the individual shelf components – for example, the fastenings for the back panel, side panels, or shelf supports.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations for special screws that can significantly improve the stability of the BILLY bookshelf?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hello! 🙂

Good question. I once upgraded my BILLY as well – I replaced the screws with sturdier ones, especially where the shelves are supported.

The original screws are designed for standard use. But if you want to put really heavy loads on it, I would recommend switching to longer or thicker screws with better threading.

A small note: also make sure the screws match the material, otherwise the wood might eventually split. :-)

Oh, and don’t forget: the wall anchor is just as important as the shelf screws when dealing with heavy weight!

Some time ago, I also had concerns about the load capacity of my BILLY shelf and wondered whether the standard materials were sufficient.

I understand the desire to make everything safer, especially when safety and accident prevention are top priorities.

In my experience, the original screws are adequate, but if you plan to carry more weight, it’s reassuring to switch to stronger screws and high-quality wall plugs. Maybe even ones with a larger diameter than the IKEA standard screws. This simply provides greater stability and peace of mind.

It’s good to discuss this because the shelf needs to remain sturdy, particularly in homes with children or pets.

I have a question about whether there are any scientifically reliable data or product specifications from IKEA regarding the load capacities of their screws.

Are the load limits for the standard screws and wall plugs clearly defined? Without this information, any recommendation is mostly just a gut feeling.

This is an important point since even stronger screw materials cannot increase the stability of the wood-based material.

I would recommend checking directly with the manufacturer or the official product documentation for more information, and possibly gathering user experiences from those who have used these shelves with loads.

If you plan to load the shelf heavily, I recommend using thicker carriage bolts or wood screws such as Spax with wood threads.

Additionally, you should ensure that the wall mounting is done securely, ideally with suitable anchors for your wall type.

To increase the load capacity, metal brackets at the shelf corners are also helpful.

The original screws are acceptable, but the brackets provide better load distribution and reduce deformations.
