Hello everyone, I noticed that the hinges on the doors of my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit have become quite stiff and brittle, causing a scraping noise when opening and closing. My question is: Are there proven methods to simply lubricate these hinges to restore smooth function, or is it better to replace them entirely? What type of lubricant is suitable, and what should be considered when replacing the old hinges? Thanks in advance for your advice!
Steps for re-oiling the KALLAX hinges:
1. Open the door and carefully inspect the hinge for visible dirt or cracks.
2. Remove dust and dirt as much as possible, for example with a dry cloth.
3. Apply thin oil (such as sewing machine oil or 3-in-1 oil) precisely to the moving parts.
4. Slowly open and close the door several times to distribute the oil.
5. Wipe off any excess oil to avoid stains on the shelf.
Replacement is recommended if the metal becomes brittle or the hinges no longer fit firmly. For replacement: IKEA sells spare hinges, and only a Phillips screwdriver is needed.

I would simply replace the hinges completely. That's true, of course you can quickly replace them, but if you clean everything thoroughly and use the right oil, you can take your time without any problems. Re-oiling doesn't cost much, is enjoyable, and the doors will work smoothly again for now. Sometimes a small maintenance effort is worth it 🙂
Thanks in advance for the initial detailed information!
That sounds reasonable, especially since some of the edges around the hinge areas on my door are partly missing smoothing – which likely confirms brittleness.
That’s exactly what I had in mind as well. I will clean it thoroughly again and then apply sewing machine oil carefully.
Is it also possible to use graphite powder as a lubricant? I read somewhere that it is dry and doesn’t stick.

Graphite powder is technically suitable as a dry lubricant and is mostly used for locks. For KALLAX hinges, it is less ideal because these moving metal parts require some oil to reduce noise and ensure smooth operation.
Additionally, graphite can attract dirt and is more difficult to remove. My recommendation: use lightweight oil for lubrication, if possible combined with a dry plastic spray as a finishing touch.

I really appreciate how helpful everyone is here – I also had the problem with squeaking KALLAX hinges.
My suggestion: If you’re unsure about re-oiling, you can carefully remove the hinges completely. Then check the plastic parts of the hinges, as they are often brittle and cracked, in which case oiling won’t fix the issue.
If that’s the case, I know it takes time, but ordering new ones and replacing them calmly will provide more long-term satisfaction with the furniture. 🙂

I wanted to add: When replacing the old hinges, pay attention to whether the shelf warps or the drill holes become enlarged when unscrewing. Sometimes the part no longer fits perfectly, and adjusting or, if necessary, correcting with small washers can help.
It is not uncommon for the shelf board and door to be slightly warped, which can also increase the squeaking.
