ᐅ How do I fix a misaligned door on BILLY shelving units?

Hello everyone, I recently bought a Billy shelving unit with doors, but one of the doors hangs crooked when closing. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sit properly on the hinges and doesn’t close flush with the frame, which looks quite unsightly and is annoying. My question is: What steps should I take to correctly fix a crooked door on Billy shelving models? Are there specific screws or adjustments on the hinges that can be made to realign the door properly? I have already tried loosening and repositioning the hinges slightly, but so far without success. Thanks in advance for your tips!

Thanks so far for the helpful information!

To add some details: The shelf is perfectly level on a smooth laminate floor, which I have also checked with a spirit level. I can also rule out any slight unevenness in the floor. The door itself does not appear to be warped, so there are no visible bends or waves.

The hinge type is the classic concealed metal hinges often used on Billy shelves. There are two screws visible along the top edge of the door, which I have already tried to loosen, but the door hardly moved.

Could someone provide detailed advice for this specific hinge type on how to best adjust the door? Are there any tricks on which screws actually need to be adjusted? Many thanks!

Yes, I can. The hinge mechanism for BILLY doors is relatively simple but effective:

1. First, remove the door. To do this, lift the door slightly at the top hinge attachment and pull it forward to take it off.

2. The hinge plates are attached to the cabinet itself, usually secured with two screws.

3. To adjust the door, first loosen the screws on the hinge plate attached to the cabinet slightly, then you can move the plate a little up/down or sideways.

4. The second adjustment option is a small eccentric screw on the hinge mount on the inside of the door. This allows you to adjust the door horizontally, which often corrects misalignment.

5. After achieving the desired adjustment, be sure to tighten all screws securely.

If the door is difficult to remove, it’s best to use a flat screwdriver to gently lift the hinge lock while loosening.

Remove the door, slightly loosen and adjust the hinges on the shelving unit, then hang the door and turn the cam screws until the door is aligned. Tighten the screws again.

This usually works every time.

Just to add: Sometimes it’s not the mechanical position of the hinges causing the sticking, but the material itself. I would recommend making only minimal adjustments, as too much tweaking can also distort the door.

Has anyone tried gently sanding the edge where the door fits too tightly with very fine sandpaper? Of course, this only works with wood or veneer surfaces, not if the door is painted.

Another option would be to check the door hinges to see if they are properly aligned and not bent. With BILLY, small distortions can sometimes occur during transport or assembly.

You should also verify that the screws at the bottom and top of the shelving unit are securely tightened, as the stability of the door attachment starts there.

In my experience, the combination of slight hinge adjustments and tightening all screws is crucial.

Good point. This often also applies to the shelves themselves. If the shelves are not properly installed or have slipped, it can increase the pressure on the door and hinges, causing them to shift.

I also recommend inspecting the drill holes for any damage. Sometimes the screws loosen due to slightly swollen particleboard, which can lead to instability.
