Hello everyone,

I have an issue with some of my Ikea METOD kitchen cabinets. Over time, the screws on the cabinet doors become loose, causing the doors to wobble noticeably. This affects their function and becomes annoying in the long run. I’m looking for a repair solution that isn’t too complicated, ideally without having to completely disassemble the cabinets or replace the screws and wall plugs entirely.

Has anyone had experience with quickly and effectively tightening loose METOD screws? Are there any tips to improve the stability of the connection with minimal tools and effort?

It’s important to me that the method is as durable as possible and doesn’t damage the furniture. Maybe something simple like wood glue, small parts, or similar?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Alternatively, repair sleeves with internal threads are possible, but more complex.

By repair sleeves, do you mean those small metal anchors or threaded inserts that can be glued in? I’ve heard of something called "Heli-Coils" before, but that seemed a bit excessive for furniture.

Could you briefly explain how these sleeves are used in METOD furniture? Is this suitable for a DIYer with little experience, or is it more of a professional technique?

Additional information on repair inserts:

The inserts, often referred to as metal threaded inserts, are indeed suitable for chipboard furniture, including Ikea METOD. The process works as follows:

- The old drill hole is thoroughly enlarged to a defined diameter.
- The hole is cleaned of dust and grease.
- Then, the supplied repair insert is firmly glued into the hole using the appropriate adhesive (usually a special two-component glue).
- After curing, a matching screw can be screwed into the metal internal thread – this provides a very strong hold.

However, the correct suitability of the drill hole and precise selection of the insert are important. The procedure requires a bit more effort since new material is introduced into the hole and careful work is necessary. For DIYers with a careful approach and basic tools (drill, adhesive, drill bits), it is doable but not entirely straightforward.

Especially when screws need to be tightened frequently or are subject to higher loads, inserts combined with wood glue filling are more durable solutions than just using toothpicks.

If there is interest, I can also provide the respective drill diameters and recommended products.

Thank you, that sounds reasonable.

At the moment, I am leaning towards a simple repair using wood glue and filler material, mainly because I think the described cause is usually the wood fibers in the drill hole giving way. If there are problems again, I can always fall back on the sleeve.

Which types of wood glue would you recommend? The parts mentioned above are made of particleboard, not solid wood.

Is a standard Ponal wood glue sufficient, or would it be better to use a stronger adhesive like polyurethane glue?

For particleboard, a standard PVA glue like white glue is usually sufficient. It is important that the glue penetrates the wood fibers well and dries properly.

Polyurethane (PU) glue offers better moisture resistance and is somewhat stronger, but it can also cause the material to swell, which may be problematic for thin boards.

If the furniture will be kept in a dry environment, white glue is the practical and less risky choice.

Brief note on screw length: Choose it no longer than necessary to avoid applying pressure on the inside, which could cause deformation.

Using toothpicks and wood glue is the common method and usually works very well.

As a supplement: If screws repeatedly come loose, the material supporting the hinges may eventually break. In that case, you should consider replacing the hinges or possibly the entire front panel.

Before repairing with glue, make sure to check whether the hinges are positioned correctly and not under excessive stress.

Adjusting the 3D adjustment slightly can also help distribute the load more evenly.
