ᐅ How do Ikea Brimnes hinges work and how do I maintain them?

Hello everyone, I have a question regarding the Ikea Brimnes furniture series, specifically about the hinges used in these pieces. I am interested in understanding exactly how these hinges work mechanically, to better grasp what happens in case of wear or a defect. Additionally, I would like to know how to properly maintain these hinges to extend their lifespan and possibly prevent squeaking or stiff movements. If anyone has specific tips on how to make opening and closing easier or how to adjust the hinges, I would appreciate a detailed explanation.

To add: The function of the Brimnes hinges is based, as LOGEMIN has correctly explained, on an integrated cup hinge with a spring mechanism that supports closing and holds the door in position.

Exactly, and to emphasize this again: It is especially the spring that ensures the door closes softly “by itself” even after extended use. However, if the spring force weakens, the door may become loose or difficult to close. In such cases, replacing the hinge is often the only solution—simple readjustment can no longer fix the problem.

Another important detail is securing the mounting plate. Over time, it can loosen due to stress. During assembly, always make sure the screws are tight and, if necessary, use a thread-locking compound.

I also have experience with Brimnes hinges and want to empathize: It’s really frustrating when the doors suddenly become hard to open or start rubbing. What helped me was being patient during maintenance and carefully going through each step. Adjusting can be tricky, especially once the furniture is fully assembled. In the end, it feels great when everything works smoothly and quietly again. So — stick with it and don’t give up right away!

For precise clarification: The Brimnes hinges are clip-on cup hinges with a mechanical spring for self-closing. They allow for three-dimensional adjustment via adjustment screws:

- Height adjustment (vertical) via the screw on the mounting plate
- Lateral adjustment (horizontal) via the screw on the hinge arm
- Adjustment of the door front relative to the cabinet surface (depth) also via the mounting plate

For maintenance, the following recommendations apply:
- Dry cleaning with a brush or cloth
- Lubrication only with light machine oil (no silicone-based greases)
- Avoid excessive lubrication to prevent dirt buildup

These instructions ensure long-lasting functionality.

This is very helpful, thank you! Could you also tell me if these springs inside the hinge can be replaced as a wear part, or does the entire unit need to be replaced?

And another question: Is it possible for the mounting plate, where the hinge locks in, to break or get damaged? I have noticed some slight wear at the fixing point on one of my doors.

Can you also say whether these springs in the hinge can be replaced as wear parts, or does the entire unit need to be replaced?

This is a common question. Unfortunately, the springs in the Ikea Brimnes hinge cannot be replaced individually. If the spring tension weakens, the complete hinge mechanism must be replaced. However, the hinges are relatively inexpensive, which makes replacement easier.

Can the mounting plate where the hinge clicks in break or get damaged somehow?

Yes, that is possible – especially if the screws are over-tightened or if the wood has swollen due to moisture. If the mounting plate becomes loose or shows cracks, repair measures such as replacing the plate or reinforcing the connecting area may be necessary. Sometimes a new dowel or a wood repair kit can also help.

Additionally, I would like to emphasize that hinges on IKEA furniture like Brimnes are often designed modularly to allow easy removal of the doors. For maintenance, it is therefore advisable to take the doors off, which reduces stress on the fittings and allows thorough lubrication and adjustment of the connections. Care should be taken not to overtighten the screws, as this can damage the threads in the wood and lead to long-term instability.
