Some time ago, I installed the countertops from the IKEA Metod kitchen and now want to clean their surface in the long term as effectively and, above all, scratch-free as possible. According to the manufacturer, the surface is melamine-coated, which means it has a smooth and durable finish.
My question to the community: Which cleaning agents and methods would you recommend for thoroughly removing everyday dirt (grease, water stains, light crumbs) without scratching or damaging the surface seal? Are there any specific no-nos or home remedies that should be avoided? And if so, why?

cassandra28 Mar 2022 13:37For water stains on melamine, regular and thorough drying is actually the most effective solution. If deposits form, you can try using a damp microfiber cloth with a little dish soap.
Baking soda powder is slightly abrasive but may be helpful for particularly stubborn stains if used carefully – for example, as a paste mixed with water, gently rubbed in, then wiped off thoroughly.
However, you should always test first in an inconspicuous area to avoid any damage.

Regarding maintenance products: Melamine countertops generally do not require special care. Regular cleaning and drying is sufficient. Specialized maintenance oils are unnecessary and can even leave residues.

FAVALERIE929 Mar 2022 08:24To avoid scratches: do not use scouring pads, steel wool, or stiff brushes. For everyday cleaning, warm water and thorough drying are sufficient.
