Hello everyone, I recently bought a Malm wardrobe from IKEA, which unfortunately has developed some small water stains on the surface. These are not deep scratches, but rather dull, white spots that likely resulted from moisture. My question is: What proven home remedies do you recommend for effectively and gently removing these water stains from Malm furniture without damaging the surface?

I am especially interested in whether simple kitchen ingredients like vinegar or baking soda are suitable, or if more specialized care products are necessary. Thank you very much for your advice!

Oh, that’s really frustrating with the water stains on the Malm! But don’t worry, you can often fix that quite well! 🙂

I used to get great results with a mixture of olive oil and lemon juice. Just put some on a soft cloth and gently rub it in, then wipe off with a dry cloth. This refreshes the finish and removes light stains.

Give it a try, it’s really effective! Good luck! :-)

I can fully understand how frustrating it is when beautiful furniture is affected by water stains. For Malm furniture, which often has a melamine-coated surface, I would generally advise against using harsh cleaners, as they can damage the finish underneath.

My suggestion would be to use a damp cotton cloth, possibly with a small amount of mild dish soap. Be very gentle to avoid harming the varnish. If that doesn’t work, you can carefully use an iron with a cloth in between to warm and draw out the moisture – but please proceed with caution!

Hello fu-arkadi,

I would like to provide a structured approach to help you effectively treat water stains on Malm furniture:

1. First, gently clean the surface with a soft, slightly damp cloth and mild soap.

2. If any stains remain, try gently polishing the spot with a very lightly dampened cotton cloth and some toothpaste (not gel!). A common mistake is applying too much pressure, which can cause unwanted scratches.

3. If the stains still appear whitish, you can apply a small amount of baby oil or furniture polish to a cloth and gently rub the area.

4. Finally, buff the spot with a clean, dry cloth.

Important: Never use harsh abrasives or solvents, as these usually damage the melamine or lacquer finish!

I hope this helps you.

Additionally, I would like to point out that Malm furniture usually has a melamine-coated surface, which is water-resistant but not indestructible.

For white water rings, a mixture of equal parts vinegar essence (5% concentration, but no higher!) and water works particularly well. Apply it gently with a soft cloth and then wipe dry thoroughly.

Vinegar can damage the finish if used at too high a concentration, so always dilute it and test first in an inconspicuous area.

Alternatively, a furniture care product based on carnauba wax is suitable, as it protects the surface and helps conceal minor water stains.

I think it’s great how some useful tips have already been shared here. Just a small note from my own experience: I once had water stains on a Malm table caused by spilled coffee.

In my case, gently rubbing with a cloth and some olive oil actually restored the shine. However, you need to be very gentle to avoid dulling the finish.

Sometimes it also helps to simply give the piece of furniture some time, as water stains often fade slightly over time.
