Hello everyone,

I recently purchased an IKEA Brimnes furniture piece and want to make sure I care for the surface properly so it stays in good condition and does not get damaged. My question is: How should the surface of IKEA BRIMNES be maintained, especially the melamine-coated areas, and which cleaning products or methods should be avoided or preferred to prevent scratches, discoloration, or peeling? Are there any other maintenance tips, such as for minor repairs or regular care, that are particularly important for this type of furniture? Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Do you experience heavy use or specific stresses that particularly affect the furniture?

Thank you, that’s exactly the kind of information I was looking for, because my Brimnes wardrobe is located in an area that experiences a mix of heavy use and occasional moisture from hands or containers. For example, moisture from glasses and occasional light scratches from keys that probably accidentally come into contact with the surface.

Is there any kind of care or treatment to protect the surface from such scratches or to minimize minor damage? I don’t want to refinish the entire wardrobe or anything like that, but a preventive or repair method would be great.

The protection and care of BRIMNES melamine-coated surfaces under heavy use work best by:

- Avoiding direct moisture buildup and wiping up any spills immediately.
- Using coasters when placing drinks.
- There are no miracle cures for scratches, but furniture polish designed for melamine can help partially conceal minor scuffs.
- Never use aggressive polishes or waxes, as these can quickly damage the surface.

If scratches are still visible, fine repair kits for melamine are sometimes available at hardware stores. These kits include color-matched fillers or touch-up pens that allow you to repair minor scratches.

For small scratches, simply wipe over with furniture polish. For deeper scratches, special repair pens from the hardware store can help. Important: Do not use sandpaper!

Hello everyone,

I had the chance to try out a BRIMNES table and learned a few things: The melamine surface prefers gentle treatment. My recommendation for the summer:

- Always use microfiber cloths with just a little water.
- Avoid strong cleaners; otherwise, the furniture can end up feeling like it has a sunburn.
- For scratches: I tried pure olive oil massage – not a miracle cure, but it gives the furniture a lively finish and makes the scratches less noticeable.

Sometimes, it just takes a bit of care and patience to enjoy it for a long time!

Many thanks to everyone for your very helpful and constructive advice! In particular, your tips on gentle cleaning and the possibility of hiding small scratches with polish are very useful to me.

If anyone knows official IKEA care instructions or has experience with such repair kits, I would greatly appreciate further details.

Otherwise, I will proceed carefully for now and report back on how the piece of furniture holds up. Thanks again to everyone!
