Hello everyone,

I am currently focusing on the best way to care for my IKEA Brimnes furniture series, especially the wardrobes and dressers. Since these are mostly made of particleboard with a melamine-coated surface, I am wondering which care products you would specifically recommend for the IKEA Brimnes model to avoid damaging the surface while providing the best possible protection against scratches, moisture, and everyday wear.

I want to avoid chipping, discoloration, or dull spots caused by the wrong cleaning agents. I am also interested in whether there are special care tips or products tailored specifically to laminate coatings, as regular furniture polish seems potentially unsuitable here.

Who has experience and can provide concrete recommendations, such as brands, ingredients, or types of care products that have proven effective? Perhaps also the differences between cleaning, protecting, and refreshing the surface?

Thank you in advance for your informed advice!

I would recommend simply using a soft microfiber cloth with some warm water. Strong cleaning agents or polish are unnecessary and won’t help with Brimnes. If you really want, you can use a special laminate care product, but it’s usually not needed.

For targeted care of IKEA Brimnes fronts, I recommend the following approach:

- Cleaning: Use a mild, pH-neutral soap solution or a specialized laminate cleaner. This gently removes dirt without damaging the melamine coating.
- Protection: Avoid waxes or oil-based polishes, as they can harm the surface or cause it to become dull.
- Refreshing: After cleaning, a protective layer with matte varnish or a special laminate care film can be applied in exceptional cases, but only for surfaces with significant wear.

In general: Do not use abrasive cleaners to avoid scratches.

Hey WOLFMI,

I have a Brimnes chest of drawers myself and swear by the simple trick of using "water + dish soap" on a soft cloth – it cleans everything well and is gentle on the surface. 😊

If you want it shinier, you can add a little window cleaner, but be careful not to use it too often, as it can make the surface brittle over time.

What I really don’t recommend is any kind of oil or heavy polish – it makes the pieces sticky or dull quickly. So keep it simple, and your Brimnes will thank you!

I would like to provide a more detailed explanation here, as this topic often leads to misunderstandings.

The Brimnes series is known to be made of particleboard with a melamine resin coating, which means:

- This surface is relatively resistant to moisture and dirt.
- However, cleaning should be done with a damp, not too wet cloth to prevent water from seeping into the edges.

Care product tips:

1. Cleaning:
- Use mild all-purpose cleaners that do not contain harsh alcohols or solvents.
- Special laminate cleaners, which often have conditioning effects and create a protective layer.

2. Protection:
- Avoid waxes or oils, as they can discolor the matte surface over time or cause the coating to peel.

3. Refreshing:
- Apply a thin layer of laminate or melamine care film once a year if the surface shows visible wear.

Common mistakes:
- Excessive moisture and aggressive cleaning agents
- Using microfiber cloths with rough textures that cause fine scratches.

Summary: Gentle care, no aggressive products, regular dry wiping, and targeted application of care products.

I would like to add that when it comes to furniture like the Brimnes, the choice of care products always depends on how the furniture is used. If the furniture is heavily used, for example in homes with children, it is advisable to use additional protection such as tabletop protective films or coasters to prevent direct moisture and scratches.

Here is a tip: For daily cleaning, microfiber cloths with lukewarm water are sufficient. If stains are more stubborn, use a small amount of mild, neutral dishwashing detergent. It is important to dry the surfaces thoroughly after cleaning.

I hope this helps with choosing the right care products!
