Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought Malm furniture from Ikea and I’m wondering if there are any specific care products for this type of furniture or if there are special considerations when cleaning and maintaining it.

I have read that Malm furniture is usually made of particle board with a foil or lacquer finish, but often there are special products that help preserve the surface protection and care for the material.

Are there any particular care products recommended for Malm furniture? Or are regular furniture cleaners sufficient? If so, which products would you suggest, or are there any that should be avoided to prevent damage to the surface?

Thank you for your help!

For Malm furniture, mild soapy water or special care products for coated surfaces are usually sufficient. Do not use harsh cleaners.

Hello Trafar,

Your question makes a lot of sense, especially since coated furniture often requires different care.

Malm furniture is usually made of particleboard with a melamine or foil finish. This surface is relatively durable, but you should avoid abrasive cleaners or alcohol, as they can damage the protective layer.

To my knowledge, there are no specific care products for Malm, but furniture care products designed for painted or laminated surfaces work well and help maintain the material. Be sure to always use a soft cloth and avoid leaving moisture on the surface for extended periods.

I’d be happy to recommend some specific brands if you like.

I appreciate that Kinbu clarified this. At first, I was worried about doing something wrong and even spent extra on special furniture care products.

By now, I prefer gentle cleaning and regular maintenance, which has worked well so far. As long as you don’t expose the surface to too much moisture and avoid harsh chemicals, the appearance will last a long time. 🙂

Malm furniture should not be cleaned with strong solvents or abrasive cleaners. Using furniture polish suitable for laminate or painted surfaces is sufficient to protect the surface well.

I would like to add that the care of Ikea Malm furniture mainly focuses on keeping the foil coating intact.

The most common damage is caused by moisture, heat, or aggressive chemicals. Using cleaners containing ammonia or solvents even once can damage the surface and make it dull.

For cleaning, I recommend a lightly damp microfiber cloth and occasional use of furniture polish with UV protection to minimize fading from sunlight. I am not aware of any specific "Malm care products"; regular furniture care products for lacquered surfaces work best in this case.
