Hello,
we are currently looking for a suitable prefabricated garage. We initially wanted an anthracite-colored sectional door with a "woodgrain" finish, meaning this wood-look texture. This was also recommended to us by a garage builder (as scratches can be repaired more easily). However, another garage builder advised us against the "woodgrain" finish, saying it would cause unattractive reflections on an anthracite color and that we should choose a smooth surface instead.
What type of surface do you have on your garage door?
Best regards,
Sabine

Don’t be confused
Those who are satisfied with it have it. The critic expresses their opinion—it should be allowed—but sometimes one should consider whether it is just an opinion or experience that is being shared.
Anthracite is generally considered more sensitive than white.

toxicmolotof7 Mar 2017 08:15We have two prefabricated garages in M Sicke anthracite (7006?) woodgrain:
1) nothing looks strange there
2) especially not from 5m (16 feet) away
3) the material is painted metal
4) for me, there is no reflection at all
5) you can find them almost everywhere, at the latest in new residential areas
Whether small, medium, large, or something completely different is a matter of taste, just like woodgrain finish or not, or the color...

So, I looked into this again and did some online research, and different opinions often simply stem from different underlying assumptions:
"Woodgrain" is a surface texture style that cannot really be judged with one single "universal" statement, because it can be produced in various ways. As a result, perceptions when looking at it may only apply to certain types of production methods.
From what I have seen multiple times and consider cheap-looking, it is probably an embossed surface on plastic.
Such a texture would be difficult to emboss into metal sheets, so in that case, it’s likely smooth metal with a textured film.
A sandblasted finish is also possible. Just like here where only a few (but all poor) examples exist, there might be mostly good examples in another region.
You can’t really recommend for or against it—objectively not, because "woodgrain" can refer to different materials, and subjectively not due to the well-known variety in personal tastes.
When I say it doesn’t suit my taste, that’s by no means a standard. The original question was not "who has the stone of wisdom," but rather "What kind of surface do you have on your garage door?" Sheet metal, baked enamel paint.
