Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how to effectively protect my Ikea Hemnes furniture from water stains. The Hemnes series is well known for its beautiful finish and light wood, but that is exactly where I see the problem: especially in areas where drinks or plants are placed, unsightly water stains often appear that are difficult to remove.
I have already considered whether some type of sealant can be applied without changing the appearance of the furniture. Tips for care or special products for prevention would also be of interest.
I am mainly curious about which methods or protective measures have proven effective in keeping the surface intact over the long term and how to best avoid or treat water stains. Has anyone had experience with Ikea Hemnes furniture or similar materials? Thanks in advance!

Basically, it should be understood that the Hemnes series has a lacquered finish that offers protection against moisture but is not completely waterproof.
To avoid water stains, the following measures are advisable:
- Use coasters or mats under any damp items
- Clean regularly but gently with a damp, not wet, cloth
- Always wipe dry after cleaning
Sealing with additional coats of lacquer is possible but must be done with compatible products to avoid surface changes. A good alternative is applying furniture wax, which creates a slightly water-repellent layer without sealing the surface.

Hey, I think it’s not a big deal if a small water stain appears on a nice Hemnes piece of furniture – it always reminds me that it’s being used and not just decoration 🙂
But seriously: I regularly apply furniture wax to mine. This makes the surface more durable, and if something gets spilled, you can easily wipe it off. Just take a cloth, put some wax on it, rub it in, and you’re done.
Of course, coasters are a must, but honestly, who always remembers to use them?

I would not recommend any additional paints or sealants. The original surface of Hemnes can warp or dissolve due to chemical additives.
Coasters and immediate removal of moisture are effective. For water stains, a damp cloth with a little dish soap often helps, followed by drying the area.
