Hello everyone, I have several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces, mainly dressers and nightstands, that I would like to protect from water stains. Since the wood is untreated and varnished, I am unsure how best to handle situations when a glass of water or a plant pot is placed on the surface.

My specific question is: What practical measures and possibly care products do you recommend to prevent ugly water stains on my Hemnes furniture? Are there certain impregnations, sealants, or regular maintenance routines that have proven effective? I would appreciate any tips and experiences.

Place felt pads under glasses and flower pots. Wipe away any moisture immediately. Additional protection can be achieved with a thin layer of furniture wax or a specialized wood protective finish.

Water stains on Hemnes furniture usually occur when moisture is not promptly absorbed or wiped away, which can later cause discoloration and swelling. I recommend a combination of preventive protection and regular maintenance. – Use felt or silicone coasters under all damp items. – Apply a suitable furniture wax or care cream designed for lacquered wood every few months. – For a long-lasting protective layer, using a fine furniture oil or a specialized sealant can be effective; however, it is advisable to test compatibility on an inconspicuous area first. – It is important to wipe up water immediately to prevent standing moisture.

To avoid water stains on IKEA Hemnes furniture, I would like to share a simple step-by-step guide that has proven effective for me:

1. Use protective pads: Felt pads or cork coasters work great to keep moisture away from the wood surface.
2. Act quickly: If water does get on the surface, wipe it off immediately with a dry cloth – waiting can cause unsightly stains.
3. Regular maintenance: I apply a beeswax-based furniture wax every 3–4 months to protect and nourish the surface without damaging the finish.
4. For stubborn stains, gently sand the area with fine sandpaper (grit 400 or higher) and then reapply wax to the surface.
5. Avoid leaving heavy or wet objects on the furniture for extended periods.

In summary, prevention is better than repair, so always ensure there is a barrier between water and wood.

In addition to the previous posts: Hemnes furniture consists of solid wood panels with a coating that is durable but not completely waterproof. From my experience, regularly applying maintenance oil slightly impregnates the surface and makes it harder for water stains to form. I also avoid placing hot or wet objects directly on the surface without a protective layer. If water does penetrate and stains appear, gently treating the area occasionally with furniture polish or a special wood wax cream can help restore the original color.

Thanks for the tips so far. I have a question to clarify: Is it advisable to apply an additional glaze or sealant on Hemnes furniture to enhance the existing IKEA finish? Or is there a risk that the furniture could lose its character or that the warranty might become void? Has anyone had experience using such products on Hemnes furniture?
