ᐅ IKEA Godmorgon Cabinet – How to Combine and Secure It?

Hello everyone,

we purchased the wall cabinet Godmorgon from IKEA as well as a countertop (which is 1.36m (4 ft 6 in) long), into which our built-in washbasin will be installed later. Our wall is made of hollow brick Unipor and has a thickness of 17.5cm (7 inches) in the installation area in the rough construction stage, plus plaster.

Now, like many others, I am wondering:
  • Which screws and wall plugs (anchors) do I need to securely mount the Godmorgon cabinet to the wall?
  • Once the countertop with the built-in washbasin is installed on top, should it be additionally supported with brackets (heavy-duty brackets)? If so, which kind?
We just want to make sure that if the children lean on or even sit on the countertop, everything will hold securely.

I really appreciate any tips or experiences you can share.

Are there also wood-look materials suitable for bathrooms?
IKEA also offers kitchen countertops… usually in the same design. This makes it very easy for you at IKEA. And the home improvement store is full of wood-look countertops 😉

I have a few questions about the process, which I currently find a bit challenging:

We currently have two separate wall-mounted countertop basins.

Our two pre-assembled Godmorgon vanity cabinets are already positioned underneath, open 😀

We would like to have a continuous worktop about 160cm (63 inches) wide above them—of course, it should be fixed to the wall and flush with the basins.

So:

1. Precise measurement of the basin cutouts is important to properly cut the worktop (2 cutouts for the basins).

2. If the worktop is not fixed to the wall with brackets (which I actually want to avoid because I prefer to secure the worktop only to the cabinets), what is the best way to proceed?

--> Mount the worktop directly on the vanity units and lift everything flush with the basins to mark the drill holes, then fix it in place at the end?
--> Sounds like a four-person job to me?

It would definitely be easier to fix the worktop to the wall with brackets first, then mount the individual vanity units to the wall (we don’t want to do this because we already have enough holes drilled in the porcelain stoneware tiles... the fewer, the better and easier).

Am I missing something here? How have you handled this?

Why should the basin be cut into the worktop at all, or why should it be done so precisely? The basin "sits" on top of the worktop—so really, I just need to make sure there’s enough space for the siphon. > Ultimately, I don’t have to recess the basin into the worktop, do I? Do I even need cutouts for the basins?

White rectangular countertop basin, 60×46 cm (24×18 inches), on a gray surface.

This basin is already wall-mounted.

That’s what I would have said too.
We recently installed two 60cm (24 inches) Godmorgon units and one 80cm (31.5 inches) Godmorgon unit.
However, we didn’t use a countertop; the washbasin was placed directly on the vanity unit.
I would actually do it this way: first fix the countertop to the wall with brackets, and until you install the cabinets, support the front with a post or something similar.
Then attach the cabinets individually, fitting them tightly just below the countertop.
IKEA also offers mounting rails where you can put in as many screws as you want and then hang the cabinet on the rail.
I only used the 4 (8) screws supplied with the brackets. You’ll need good anchors and sufficiently long screws. In theory, those 8 mounting points can hold up to 320 kg (705 lbs) in drywall.
With the right tile drill bit, drilling the holes should not be a problem.

Hello @Tolentino,

could you please tell me the distance between the upper drill hole of the wall mounting and the top edge of the washbasin for the Godmorgon?
I can’t find this measurement in the Ikea assembly instructions.

Thank you very much

Phew, now there are drawers in front... I don’t remember exactly. I think about 4.5 cm (1.75 inches). Unfortunately, I don’t have much time to check right now.
