Hello everyone, I am planning to move soon and want to carefully disassemble my Ikea Metod kitchen/cabinet modules and correctly reassemble them at the new place. My question is, what methods have proven effective for storing both the furniture and the fittings (dowels, screws, fittings) in a way that keeps them undamaged and well-organized? I am concerned that the joints might get damaged during disassembly, making reassembly more difficult. I am also interested in how you keep track of the individual parts, since Metod combines various different doors, drawers, and shelves. Are there any special tips or tools to make the disassembly and reassembly process efficient and error-free? I would appreciate practical advice!

Most importantly: Collect all screws, nuts, and small parts in labeled bags or small boxes and attach or place them directly with the corresponding furniture pieces. Take photos of each assembly before disassembly to keep the sequence clear.

Hello karhau, I completely understand your concern. With Ikea Metod, it is crucial to approach the process systematically. My advice is to empty the cabinets completely and start by unscrewing the doors. Then remove the shelves and drawers, which makes handling easier. The dowels used can sometimes get stuck when pulled out, so it’s better to carefully loosen them with a flat screwdriver to avoid damage. Regarding organization: I always prepare small labeled bags with the corresponding cabinet number, where I collect all screws and fittings. Before fully disassembling the cabinet, take photos of the current condition of the fittings and connection points – this really helps with reassembly.

As an addition: A structured approach is essential with IKEA Metod, as the connecting mechanisms are often complex. It is recommended to download the official assembly instructions as a PDF before disassembly. They help to understand the sequence of the components. When removing the cam locks, a special screwdriver with a magnet is advisable to avoid losing the small screws. Additionally, it is helpful to clearly label all bags of small parts by cabinet, compartment, and number to make reassembly easier to follow. In practice, sturdy cardboard and dividers have proven effective for transporting all individual parts in an organized manner.

Great topic! I moved my Metod cabinets last year and can only say: take photos at every step! That helped me so much. Even if you think you’ll remember, details are quickly forgotten. My recommendation: label each component, for example, door A1, shelf B2, etc. That way, when reassembling, you know exactly what goes together. Another tip from me: wrap the doors in blankets or bubble wrap – this protects them from scratches during transport! Wishing you continued success with your move – you’ll definitely manage!

Photos are helpful. Important: Do not forcefully remove anchors, or they will become unusable. Carefully loosen screws and set them aside. Take your time during disassembly, and it will work out.
