Hello everyone, I have the following question: How much weight can the Ikea Brimnes cabinets hold?

I am planning to get one of the Brimnes cabinets but want to make sure they are sturdy enough to store heavy items at home. I am particularly interested in how much weight each shelf can support, whether the load capacity is affected by the assembly method, and how the weight limits vary depending on the cabinet size.

Does anyone have practical experience with the durability and load capacity of these cabinets or reliable technical information? Are there any recommendations on what to consider when using them, for example regarding wall anchoring or how to store heavy items? I want to avoid the shelves warping or the cabinet becoming unstable. Thanks for your insights!

The main plan is to store binders, which can be quite heavy at times, as well as lighter electrical appliances and some kitchen utensils.

This is an important note because binders can quickly add a considerable amount of weight to one or several shelves. A single fully loaded binder can weigh around 3-5 kg (6.6-11 lbs).

I would recommend distributing the heavy binders as evenly as possible across multiple compartments. For example, if you want to store 20 kg (44 lbs) of binders, it’s better to load two shelves with 10 kg (22 lbs) each rather than putting the whole weight on one shelf.

Do you have exact sources or direct quotes from the manufacturer’s specifications?

Unfortunately, Ikea does not publish specific load capacities for every piece of furniture online, but the included data sheet (assembly instructions) often contains notes on the maximum weight per shelf. In relevant reviews and forums, the capacity per shelf is generally described as around 15 kg (33 lbs).

How professional was the assembly on your end? Did you assemble it yourself or have a specialist do it?

From my experience, assembling with a second helper significantly improves stability because the parts fit together more precisely and screws are tightened better. Loose fittings can affect load-bearing capacity later. For this reason, I recommend checking the screws again after assembly.

The values I mentioned are based on standard furniture guidelines and the safety instructions provided in Ikea assembly manuals. Although explicit weight limits in kilograms are often not extensively documented for the public, the following applies:

- The assembly instructions usually state that cabinets should only be used with wall mounting.
- The strength of the shelves corresponds roughly to particleboard about 12–18mm (0.5–0.7 inches) thick, which typically allows for a load capacity of around 15 kg (33 lbs) per shelf.

These figures align with common standards for similar furniture items.

My recommendation: If you want precise information, you could contact Ikea customer service or compare with furniture tests published in specialist magazines.

However, wall mounting is absolutely essential for safety.

I completely understand that you are looking for a sturdy solution. I had a similar situation myself, with many folders stored in a Brimnes cabinet. It initially feels uncertain to place heavier items on such an inexpensive cabinet.

- For me, it was especially important not to overload it and to keep most of the heavy items at the bottom.
- I also checked from time to time to make sure the cabinet was still firmly attached to the wall, as it can loosen over time.

Sometimes it’s a bit of a balancing act, but if you are careful, it works.

Don’t be discouraged; the Brimnes cabinets served their purpose well for me.

Hey! I’ve also filled my Brimnes wardrobe with folders and even heavy boxes! 🙂

I’m really satisfied with the stability. A little tip: If you’re concerned, you can reinforce the shelves with thin wooden strips or something similar!

That’s exactly how I see it! Just pay attention during assembly and distribute the weight evenly, then it works great! Good luck with your project!

15 kg (33 lbs) per floor is realistic. Important: Secure it to the wall and distribute the load evenly. Otherwise, the material will warp.

One more small addition: If you plan to store sensitive or electronic devices, please note that the shelves are designed for point loads, not for vibrations or shocks. The Brimnes cabinets are intended mainly for static loads.

For safety, you can also use anti-slip mats or foam pads to cushion the devices.

Additionally, air circulation inside the cabinets can sometimes be limited, which should be considered for devices that require ventilation.
