Glasteven027 Jul 2021 08:12Hello everyone, I am facing the challenge of installing IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets in an apartment with uneven walls. The walls are not perfectly vertical, which makes the usual slotting and screwing options less effective. My question is: how can I ensure that Metod cabinets are still mounted securely and stably? What additional measures or tools are useful to minimize the risk of tipping or deformation? Are there proven techniques to compensate for wall irregularities without losing the modularity of the cabinets? Thanks for your tips!
Hey Glasteven0, first of all, great question – crooked walls are definitely a classic challenge when assembling furniture! 😅 From my experience, flexibility is key. I recommend getting longer spacers or small wedges so you can compensate for unevenness right at the base of the cabinet. It’s also important to firmly connect the cabinets to each other so they support one another. In the end, the entire structure will hold up better, even if the wall isn’t perfectly straight.
Hello everyone, I would like to share a structured approach here: 1. First, measure the wall carefully – use a level and possibly a guideline string to determine any tilt. 2. Compensate for unevenness or slant with wooden or plastic shims. 3. To secure the cabinets to the wall, make sure to drill holes in the correct positions – with Ikea Metod cabinets, there are often adjustable screw points available. 4. Connect the cabinets to each other using the designated fastening fittings (corner brackets or minifix connectors) to ensure they are aligned properly. 5. Additionally, angle brackets can be installed from above or below to further increase stability. It is important that the cabinets support each other and are not hanging individually on a sloped wall. For maximum security, wooden panels can also be used as a base, cut precisely to plumb beforehand.

Good question! In practice, sturdy plastic shims are great because they deform less than wood and don’t absorb moisture. But wooden shims also work well, preferably finely planed and then painted or sealed. Metal shims are less common because they can cause noise when opening and are less flexible for adjustments. What’s important is that the shims fit precisely and are firmly in place – otherwise, it will still wobble. If everything is properly screwed in, it will hold securely, so you can confidently use the cabinet without worry.
