I recently assembled an IKEA METOD kitchen and am facing the challenge of fitting the baseboards neatly and without unsightly gaps on a slightly uneven floor. The floor panel is not completely flat, which causes the baseboards either not to sit flush in some areas or to create unwanted gaps in others. My question is: What is the best way to install the IKEA METOD baseboards when the floor is not perfectly level, to ensure a visually pleasing, clean, and stable fit? Are there any specific techniques, adjustments, or additional materials that have proven effective? I want to avoid having to rework the baseboards later or having them become loose.

Most people use small wedges or flexible joint compound to level out unevenness. Thanks, that sounds good so far. Would you recommend inserting the wedges before or after installing the baseboards? I’m asking because I’m unsure if the baseboards will still snap into place properly if I put something underneath them beforehand.

- Measure the unevenness precisely
- Adjust small wedges to the highest points
- Insert the baseboards with light pressure first to secure them neatly
This prevents stress that can cause cracks or loose-fitting baseboards.

Basically, the IKEA METOD baseboards are designed for flat floors. For slight unevenness, you can proceed as follows:
- Check the floor with a long spirit level before installation.
- Minor uneven spots can be smoothed out lightly with sandpaper or compensated for by placing wooden wedges underneath.
- Alternatively, flexible sealing strips can be glued under the baseboard to even out uneven areas and close small gaps.
- METOD baseboards usually click into place. Make sure the clip mechanism is not blocked by any underlay, otherwise the wedges need to be very precise.
Sometimes patience is required, but the final result is worth it.
