Hello dear community!
I am new here, so please forgive me if I have not included all the information right away. I can gladly provide more details if needed.
We are currently remodeling the upper floor completely to create a separate apartment for ourselves. My parents-in-law will remain in the ground floor. Everything will be fully separated, meaning a separate staircase, cellar partition, etc.
I have followed the guideline somewhat. I hope the information is sufficient; otherwise, I can provide more as mentioned.

Why has the design turned out as it is now?

East and south sides face municipal roads

- So far, I am very satisfied with the plan. It basically reflects what we envision. Still, I’d love to hear opinions—perhaps we are a bit biased.
- The children’s room door will be moved down so that the parents’ area can be fully separated with a door in front of the master bathroom.
- The only concern is the children’s bathroom and guest WC—I don’t see how to make them larger. Do you think this will work and look good?

Grillhendl16 Jul 2020 16:01I don’t think the whole concept is very well thought out. It might be worth considering whether less could actually be more. I also grew up in a tiny, windowless wet room (there was a regular bathroom as well). I found it quite practical, but calling it beautiful is another matter. After a thorough shower, the small space felt almost suffocating, and despite having a ventilation system, I had to leave the door open for a while. HOWEVER, it’s an old farmhouse. If you’re already going through the effort of a renovation, a room like that would be an absolute no-go.
If having such a space is really important, I would even consider removing the cloakroom and incorporating that area instead.

And after showering, wet footprints can be found on the way to the toilet.
I’m afraid the chalet won’t work out. From the outside, maybe with a lot of imagination, but from the inside, no.
Do the parents-in-law actually want the renovation, or is it just reluctant approval out of necessity? The floor plan downstairs doesn’t fit anymore either. Huge, useless stairwell inside the apartment. Every small extension makes it darker.

Every small extension makes it darker. The parents-in-law want it. Well, the renovation is much cheaper than building new. Here, a small plot costs as much as the renovation.
What improvement suggestions would there be? Not everything is ‘bad’ after all.

Grillhendl16 Jul 2020 17:00Have you considered combining the children's bathroom, the toilet, and the planned cloakroom into one room? You could then add a window to the hallway (next to the office) and at least avoid having a completely windowless bathroom.
The open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area is quite spacious at 51m² (550 sq ft). You could move the kitchen wall inward slightly and create a cloakroom area there.
