Hello everyone, I am currently planning a renovation of my Ikea Hemnes cabinet and would like to know which tools are absolutely necessary. My main focus is on disassembling the existing parts, possibly making some adjustments (for example, cutting wooden pieces or drilling new holes), and then reassembling everything securely. My question is: Which tools are really essential for this kind of Hemnes renovation to work efficiently and achieve good results without too much effort? I already have some basic tools at home but want to avoid buying unnecessary equipment. Tips from experienced DIYers would be greatly appreciated, including recommendations for any special tools that are particularly useful.

Hello annaje, for the Hemnes renovation you mainly need a cordless drill with appropriate bits, a good drill bit (around 5mm (0.2 inches)), a small hammer, and possibly a chisel. Everything else is usually optional.

Hello annaje, welcome to the forum! I’d like to provide you with a more detailed list that has proven useful for Hemnes modifications: - Cordless screwdriver, ideally with variable speed - Various screwdriver bits (Phillips PH2 is the standard for Ikea) - Drill with wood drill bits (3mm to 6mm (0.12 to 0.24 inches)) - Chisel for adjusting wooden parts - Tape measure and pencil for precise marking - Sandpaper (grit 120 or finer) for refining edges - A small hammer or rubber mallet Clamps are also helpful for holding pieces securely if you want to work very precisely. If you plan to saw wooden parts, a handsaw or jigsaw is recommended. The most important thing is that your tools are sharp and in good condition.

I would also recommend a spirit level to make sure everything is perfectly straight in the end. Otherwise, a cordless drill, drill bits, and screwdrivers are usually sufficient.

I completely understand your uncertainty, annaje. A furniture modification can be quite challenging, especially when you’re not sure if you have the right tools on hand. I’ve been there myself, and I really appreciate that you’re thinking it through beforehand. For me, the cordless drill was the most important tool because the effort involved in screwing without it becomes quite significant.

To complete the work efficiently and cleanly, you should also make sure to use high-quality screwdrivers or bits to prevent the screws from stripping. This is often a weak point, especially with IKEA furniture made from particleboard. If you want to make adjustments, such as drilling new holes, a standard wood drill bit set would be recommended.
