bajobeHello everyone,
I am planning to assemble a complete Ikea Metod kitchen soon. Since this is my first time and I want to work as efficiently as possible, I am interested in knowing: What tools do I actually need to complete the entire kitchen installation from start to finish without any issues? I don’t just mean basic tools like screwdrivers, but also any special tools and aids that are important for fitting the cabinets, countertop, doors, and connections. Who has experience with the Metod system or can provide me with a comprehensive list of necessary tools and their usefulness? Thanks in advance!

Hello bajobe,
Here is a brief list of the tools I use for the Metod assembly, with explanations:
- Cordless screwdriver: The most important tool; it makes screwing quick and clean.
- Spirit level: Essential to ensure the cabinets hang level.
- Tape measure: Important for all measurements—especially for adjustments.
- Drill: Mainly for wall plugs and, if needed, screws in walls.
- Screwdrivers (Phillips + flathead): For smaller screwing tasks.
- Pencil: For marking on walls and cabinets.
- Utility knife or carpet knife: For opening packages and cutting films.
- Folding ruler or straight edge: For longer measurements and straight lines.
If you plan to work on outlets, connections, or the countertop yourself, a small angle grinder or jigsaw can be useful.
A tip: Keep all your bits ready, as Metod often uses Phillips and Torx screws.
Good luck!

It’s important to me to be able to cut or adjust the countertop precisely if small modifications are needed. Do you have any experience on how carefully one should work with the Metod countertop to avoid causing damage?
And one more question regarding screws: metal or wood screws, or both? Especially for wall mounting and for connecting the cabinets if they are fixed with anchors.
Regarding the countertop: Metod uses standardized panels that can be easily cut with a regular jigsaw equipped with a fine-toothed blade. It is important to make slow and steady cuts to prevent splintering.
Use clamps and place a protective layer underneath to keep everything stable. Lightly sand the cut edge to avoid splinters.
About the type of screws:
- For wall mounting, anchors with suitable screws are usually used (depending on the wall type, e.g., masonry or drywall).
- For connecting the modules, wood screws included in the delivery are often used.
Always check the assembly instructions, as Ikea uses its own screw sets and fittings.

Additionally, I recommend having a small ratchet with appropriate bits on hand. Some screw types are difficult to reach with a cordless drill or cause the screws to wear out faster.
A spirit level at least 60cm (24 inches) long is helpful for Metod, as the cabinets are quite long. This ensures a straight installation.
You should also keep a rubber mallet handy to gently tap components into place without damaging them.
