Hello everyone, I am currently planning a renovation of my Ikea Hemnes cabinet and would like to know which tools are absolutely necessary. My main focus is on disassembling the existing parts, possibly making some adjustments (for example, cutting wooden pieces or drilling new holes), and then reassembling everything securely. My question is: Which tools are really essential for this kind of Hemnes renovation to work efficiently and achieve good results without too much effort? I already have some basic tools at home but want to avoid buying unnecessary equipment. Tips from experienced DIYers would be greatly appreciated, including recommendations for any special tools that are particularly useful.
Thanks for the tips so far! I have an additional question: For the renovation, I want to cut a panel and possibly adjust some corners. So far, I only have a handsaw, but I don’t have a jigsaw. Is the handsaw enough for this, or would a jigsaw be more suitable? Regarding the drill: My cordless screwdriver also has a drilling function, but I’m unsure if that’s sufficient to drill precise holes into the Hemnes particleboard.
Hello annaje, I’d like to address your questions in more detail. A jigsaw is generally more versatile for cutting panels, especially if you want to make curves or narrow cuts. For straight, simple cuts on thinner wood panels, a hand saw can also be sufficient – however, the cut is usually cleaner and faster with a jigsaw. Important: Use a fine-toothed blade to avoid splintering.
Regarding the cordless drill with a drill function, the quality depends greatly on the device. It might be enough for careful pilot drilling in chipboard. However, if you want to create larger holes or achieve more precise guidance, a separate drill is often better. Chipboard tends to splinter easily, so I recommend protecting the surface with masking tape before drilling and drilling slowly.
One more tip: Always start by drilling with a small diameter to pilot the hole and enlarge it if necessary. This reduces the risk of damage to the material.

I initially only had a cordless drill and a handsaw, but after I got a jigsaw, remodeling the Hemnes piece became really enjoyable! The work goes much more smoothly, and the cuts are noticeably cleaner. Make sure to buy different saw blades as well, so you’re prepared for every type of wood! Good luck, it will turn out great!
Hey annaje! I really like that you’re preparing so thoroughly. I’d like to add a small tip: definitely get some good sandpaper or a sanding block to smooth all the cut edges. Nothing’s more annoying than splinters or rough edges. 😄 Also, after sanding, you might consider protecting the cut edges with clear varnish or paint in the matching color – it looks more professional and makes your Hemnes more durable.
Thank you for all the great advice! I have now decided to borrow a jigsaw, as that really seems to be the better option. I will be careful when drilling and will get a fine saw blade for the jigsaw. I also plan to adjust some corners with a chisel. Do you have any special tips to avoid accidentally removing too much material?
Good choice with the jigsaw! Regarding the bevel chisel: always work with short, controlled movements and keep the chisel as flat as possible to avoid removing too much material. It’s better to work in several small steps rather than one big cut. If you’re unsure, it helps to lightly score or rout the cut line beforehand to better control the break line. And always make sure to protect your hands!
