I am currently planning a renovation of my IKEA Hemnes wardrobe and want to prepare well for the project in advance. For me, the question is: which tools are especially useful when modifying the IKEA Hemnes and why? I have heard that you need not only a cordless drill but possibly also special tools for wooden parts and fittings. I would appreciate it if someone in the forum could share their experiences and tips on which tools have really proven useful in everyday renovation or modification work. My goal is to avoid unnecessary tools but also not to miss anything important. Who has done this before and can provide specific recommendations?

Thanks already for the many helpful suggestions! To give a more precise answer to Domau0’s question: My main goal is to vary the internal shelves, improve the drawers, and possibly modify the doors to incorporate a glass door function. I imagine this might require fine adjustments, including drilling new holes or cutouts. Therefore, I want to make sure I’m not working with just basic tools but am sufficiently equipped in a professional manner. A router, for example, would be completely new to me in the context of Hemnes – but how useful is it in practice? Are there any proven tips or tricks here?

A plunge router is a great tool if you want to work on edges or make precise recesses for door hardware. Especially when installing glass doors, you can use router bits to create fine grooves for glass strips or to round off edges exactly.

Practical tip: Use guide rails or router jigs to keep the routing depth and line clean. For beginners, I recommend practicing first on scrap wood to get a feel for the tool. A high-quality plunge router can really professionalize the renovation – but it’s not essential if you prefer to stick with screws and drilling.

From my perspective, the quality of the tools is also important. For remodeling the Hemnes, the following tool set is essential:

- Cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque control to insert screws precisely and without damage
- Drill bit set, ideally including wood and metal bits for pre-drilling holes, especially when new hole positions are needed for fittings
- Accurate measuring and marking tools such as a square, a tape measure, and a sharp pencil
- Pliers and small adjustable tools for fittings and hinges

Another important point is a well-equipped workbench or at least a stable work surface to securely hold the furniture parts. This is particularly helpful when working on doors.

I would like to add that choosing the right cordless drill is crucial: a model with a long battery life and good ergonomics helps prevent fatigue during extended renovation work.

In addition, I have found it useful to have a manual hand drill (brace drill) on hand for precise drilling and marking when especially accurate and careful work is required.

I also recommend magnetic strips for screws to prevent them from getting lost and to keep them easily accessible. This is especially helpful when working with many small screws, such as those used in IKEA furniture.

Very important, I would add: a marking knife can provide cleaner markings than a regular pencil.

In short: Besides the cordless drill, two tools are essential for the Hemnes renovation –

1. A good, adjustable drill bit set for woodworking
2. A hammer with a rubber coating that protects the wood and allows damage-free fitting work

Additionally, I recommend always working on a stable work surface. This especially makes tasks like modifying doors and drawers easier and improves accuracy. If doors need to be altered, a fine-toothed blade for the jigsaw can be useful when making cuts.

To return to the router discussion: It truly has the potential to take your Hemnes modification to a whole new level, both visually and functionally. Especially the ability to precisely rout so-called rebates or shadow gaps really sets the furniture apart from the standard. You should only attempt this if you are confident with your craftsmanship, but if done well, it can make a strong impression.

Also, if you are working with painted or foil surfaces, a router allows you to neatly break edges so they don’t chip – something that’s hard to achieve with sanding alone.

But caution: The router remains more of a specialized tool. If you only want to make small adjustments or are less experienced, it’s better to stick with a drill, screwdriver, and file.
