Hello everyone, I am currently exploring the topic of sustainability in furniture and specifically wondering: Are there any sustainable DIY ideas for repurposing IKEA Hemnes furniture?

I am especially interested in creative and practical approaches that allow giving these pieces a second life through simple or moderately complex modifications. These could include conversions, upgrades, repurposing, or repair methods.

It is important to me that the materials and methods used are as environmentally friendly as possible, meaning they should avoid artificial pollutants or unnecessary resource consumption and ideally support recyclability.

Has anyone had experience with specific projects or can share ideas that work well with the Hemnes series? Tips on preparation or the best tools to use would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

As an addition: Those who want to sustainably modify their Hemnes furniture should also pay attention to choosing suitable screws and connectors made of durable metal to support long-lasting durability.

One option is to use oak or beech wood strips for reinforcement, as the originally used pine wood is visually appealing but softer and wears out more quickly.

Removing unnecessary drawers and installing modular shelf inserts made from natural materials can also improve functionality.

I would like to add an important point: sustainability is not only about materials but also about methods and planning.

Before starting any renovation or reuse, the current condition should be carefully documented and the desired changes precisely planned. This helps to avoid waste, wrong purchases, and unnecessary material consumption.

Furthermore, recyclable components such as metal fittings are better than plastic ones because they have a lower long-term environmental impact.

For paints and oils, products with ecolabel or EMAS certification support a sustainable choice.

I agree with this. However, I would like to point out some possible technical challenges: IKEA’s pre-assembled furniture often comes with fixed drill holes, which can make it difficult to change connection points afterward.

Therefore, when modifying Hemnes furniture, I especially recommend:

- Using wood connector plates that fit through narrow drill holes
- Adding discreet metal corner brackets for extra support
- Refinishing the wood surfaces with fine-grit sandpaper to prevent splintering around the drill holes

Careful planning before screwing anything in is essential to ensure stability, especially when making modifications such as attaching additional worktops or casters.

To round off my thoughts: Anyone approaching the project for the first time should also consider the topic of safety.

If there are children in the household, natural, saliva-resistant coatings are recommended, as they are safe for health.

Even when using natural oil, it is important to allow sufficient drying times and ventilation to optimally protect the wood surface.

The many creative contributions here demonstrate how Hemnes furniture can be transformed in a variety of ways with some basic DIY skills!

Thank you for the detailed and helpful advice so far! I especially appreciate the emphasis on environmentally friendly materials and the thorough tips regarding surface treatment.

[@KUDAISY] your step-by-step recommendations sound practical. In particular, the idea of replacing the back panel with FSC-certified wood is something I hadn’t considered before.

I have one more question: Are there sustainable yet affordable ways to visually update Hemnes drawers, for example by changing the fronts, without using plastic films or lacquered surfaces?

If anyone has experience with this, I would appreciate examples from your own practice.

Definitely. Here is a suggestion: One good option is wood veneers or self-adhesive cork sheets made from natural materials. They are easy to cut and give the surface a warm, natural appearance.

Alternatively, drawers can be treated with non-toxic wax stains. Wax stain penetrates the wood and changes the color intensity without forming a hard lacquer layer. This keeps the wood breathable.

If you are skilled with DIY, you can also cut thin, untreated solid wood panels (e.g. pine or beech) to size and glue them on as new fronts – ideally using water-based wood glue. This way, you get a completely new look and can mix wood types or colors.

It’s also good to retrofit handles made of wood or metal, which are more sustainable than plastic.
