Hello everyone, I am considering modifying my IKEA Besta furniture piece into a TV and media unit. My specific question is: Is there a clear, preferably simple and step-by-step guide on how to modify the BESTA system to include cable management, create space for consoles and receivers, and possibly even install a sturdy mount for the TV? It is important to me that the steps are manageable for a layperson without the need for expensive special tools or advanced woodworking skills. Does anyone have experience with this or know of a guide on how to approach it? Thank you very much in advance!

I think that’s quite an ambitious project for a piece of furniture that wasn’t really designed for this purpose. The IKEA BESTA is a modular system, yes, but converting it into a proper media unit involves much more than just drilling a few holes. Why go through all that effort in the first place? New furniture is usually more affordable and generally much more stable anyway. In my opinion, spending too much time on custom modifications here is a waste of effort.

Conversion is possible, installing cable passages, drilling holes, adjusting the back panel. The TV mount is usually installed separately. Instructions are rarely provided, so plan step by step on your own.

Basically: For converting an IKEA BESTA into a TV and media unit, I recommend the following steps:

- Planning the dimensions and devices
- Removing the back panel to allow cable routing
- Purchasing or making cable grommets (e.g., rubber grommets)
- Reinforcing the cabinet frame if a TV bracket is to be mounted on the back panel
- Installing power strips inside to connect devices closer to the unit
- Optional: Choosing shelves with sufficient depth to accommodate consoles and receivers

Complete step-by-step instructions are rare, but these points provide a solid foundation. It is important to ensure a stable construction and adequate ventilation.

Why would anyone even go through the effort? New furniture is usually cheaper and generally more stable anyway.

The reason is that I have been using the BESTA system for years and am very satisfied with the basic design. It offers plenty of storage space, is flexible to configure, and matches the look of my living room well. Therefore, I prefer to remodel and expand rather than buy all new pieces. Sustainability also plays a role for me.

Reinforcement of the furniture carcass if a TV mount is to be attached to the back panel

What does such a reinforcement ideally look like? Are there typical materials or methods you would recommend?

For reinforcement, it is advisable to screw a plywood or MDF panel at least 12 mm (0.5 inches) thick behind the back panel. This panel distributes the load more evenly and provides a secure support for the TV mount.

Alternatively, you can screw metal brackets inside the cabinet to reduce stress. It is important that the screws do not just go into the thin back panel but into a sturdier panel behind it or into the side walls.

This reinforcement is crucial to safely support the weight of a large television.
