Hello everyone, I am planning to refurbish our guest room and am currently looking at the Ikea PAX wardrobes. I am particularly interested in which models from the PAX series work best for a guest room where we need storage space for clothes and blankets, but at the same time, the wardrobe should not be too imposing and should keep the room feeling as open as possible. Does anyone have experience with different PAX variants in such rooms? Which dimensions, interior fittings, or doors work well if the room is to be used occasionally for multiple purposes?

Additionally, I would like to mention that the choice of doors is crucial. Sliding doors are especially recommended for smaller guest rooms, as they do not require extra space to open. Hinged doors have a more classic look but need more clearance. For the interior, I suggest a combination of a clothes rail for jackets and hooks for bags or coats. Shelves and baskets for laundry or shoes complement the storage space. Important: pay attention to the height of the Pax – if you extend it up to the ceiling, you make use of every centimeter (inch) efficiently.

Good question, Darianla! Here is a brief guide on how you can proceed:

- First, measure the room, including doorways and windows.
- Then use the Pax planner on the Ikea website to try out different dimensions and door types.
- For guest rooms, narrow wardrobes 50 or 75 cm wide with a depth of 35 cm (20 or 30 inches wide with a depth of 14 inches) are often suitable if you have limited space.
- Choose the interior fittings so that you can combine hangers, shelves, and drawers.
- Sliding doors save space, while mirrored doors make the room appear larger.

Typical mistakes include choosing wardrobes that are too large for small rooms or lacking sufficient storage due to poor planning of the interior layout.

I think the overall impression is very important: a very wide PAX can quickly feel overwhelming in a guest room, even if the storage space is practical. One option I use myself is PAX units with open compartments and only partially closed doors. This makes the wardrobe appear lighter, emphasizes functionality, and at the same time creates a pleasant look. Mirrors on the doors should not be too dominant so the room doesn’t feel too busy.

Thank you for the tips so far, especially the advice regarding the different depths and door types, which I find very helpful. What I would like to know is: Are there any recommendations for material and color selections for PAX, especially for a guest room? I want to keep the furniture somewhat neutral without it looking outdated. Maybe white or light fronts are preferable? What about black or dark frames for PAX?

Regarding your question about materials and colors:

- White or light-colored fronts are indeed the most popular choice for guest rooms, as they make the space feel bright and open.
- For a modern look, matte finishes work well; for example, "white" or "birch" veneer is timeless.
- Black or dark frames look elegant but can also make the room appear smaller.

If you prefer darker colors, I recommend pairing them with light-colored walls or sufficient lighting; otherwise, the room can quickly feel cramped.

Small details like glass sliding doors or light-colored shelves further enhance the upscale appearance.

Oh yes, light-colored fronts are great for a guest room! They make the space feel friendly and inviting. I chose a white PAX wardrobe with glass doors – it looks really stylish and is practical because you can see where everything is. So, I would say you can’t go wrong with white! 🙂
