Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy bookcase from IKEA, and during assembly, I noticed that one of the door hinges is damaged. Now I want to replace the hinge but haven’t found a detailed step-by-step guide explaining the process.

I’m interested in how to best remove the old hinge, exactly which tools I need, and of course, how to properly and securely attach the new hinge so that the door fits perfectly and opens smoothly. It would also be great to know whether special screws or replacement parts are used, ideally ones that can be obtained directly from IKEA.

Who can provide a detailed step-by-step guide or perhaps share their own experience with replacing the BILLY bookcase hinges? Thanks in advance for any help!

What a great topic! I recently replaced my BILLY door hinges as well and can say: it’s not rocket science!

It’s important not to damage the holes on the “carcass side” when loosening the screws; otherwise, the new hinge won’t fit properly. If that happens, an easy fix is to use a slightly larger dowel or wood glue with a matching wooden dowel in the hole before screwing it back in – it holds perfectly!

And don’t get discouraged if the door doesn’t fit perfectly the first time you hang it – with patience and the adjustment screws on the hinges, you can easily fine-tune it.

Good luck! 🙂
