Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy bookcase from IKEA, and during assembly, I noticed that one of the door hinges is damaged. Now I want to replace the hinge but haven’t found a detailed step-by-step guide explaining the process.

I’m interested in how to best remove the old hinge, exactly which tools I need, and of course, how to properly and securely attach the new hinge so that the door fits perfectly and opens smoothly. It would also be great to know whether special screws or replacement parts are used, ideally ones that can be obtained directly from IKEA.

Who can provide a detailed step-by-step guide or perhaps share their own experience with replacing the BILLY bookcase hinges? Thanks in advance for any help!

You will need: a Phillips screwdriver and possibly a small flathead screwdriver for prying.

Simply loosen the hinge with the screwdriver, remove the old screws, position the new hinge, and screw it in. Make sure the hinge is properly aligned. Done.

That's true, that's the core of the process, but I think the last step of aligning it correctly really makes the difference! If the door hinge is even slightly misaligned, the door tends to swing out of place when opening and closing. 😉

My tip: After screwing it in, open and close the door several times, carefully make adjustments, and ensure it fits perfectly. And yes, be sure to use the appropriate screws from IKEA, otherwise the length might not be quite right.

That’s a great question because I often hesitated to do something like this myself, fearing I might ruin the door or damage the cabinet.

I can completely understand that. What helped me back then was to proceed step by step and take my time. One tip: it’s best to carefully examine the hinge before replacing it and compare it to the new one, so there are no surprises.

Are there actually different types of hinges for BILLY, or are they always compatible? It would be great to know if someone is sure about that.

BILLY shelves use standardized hinges. This means the new hinge usually fits without any adjustments.

To replace the hinge, simply:
1. Remove the door by lifting it off from the top as usual
2. Unscrew the hinge on the cabinet side
3. Take off the hinge
4. Attach the new hinge in the same position
5. Tighten the screws
6. Rehang and align the door

I think this is often the root of the problem—many assume that all IKEA hinges are the same, but there have been variations across different production years and models.

You shouldn’t just buy the first replacement hinge you find without checking which type is actually installed on your unit. Otherwise, you might end up with hinges that don’t fit perfectly and then blame it on "instruction issues," when in fact the wrong parts were used.

So: First verify the model and production year, then order the correct parts accordingly!
