Hello everyone, I noticed that the original hinges on two of the five doors of my Ikea Billy bookshelf have worn out quite a bit. The doors no longer close properly and hang slightly crooked. Now I’m considering replacing the hinges entirely. My question to you: What alternatives to the original BILLY hinges are available that are at least equal in quality or better? It would be great if you could share tips on durable, easy-to-install replacement hinges and maybe also some advice on compatibility with the BILLY shelf. Thanks in advance!

Used Hettich Sensys hinges. They are relatively quiet and have good soft-closing damping. Thanks for the tip, that’s really useful because the doors here are used frequently, and a quieter closing would be appreciated.Does anyone have experience whether this damping system is also stable and compatible with the Ikea Billy bookshelf? Are there special installation options for it, or do you have to remount the shelf?
The damping system from Hettich Sensys usually fits BILLY without any issues. However, it is important to ensure that the cutout in the door panel for the hinge is large enough. If this is not the case, minor woodworking may be required. The attachment itself is done at the same points, so no new drilling in the cabinet body is necessary.

You need to make sure that the cutout in the door panel for the hinge is large enoughThat’s good to know. My doors are original Ikea, so I assume the recesses should fit. Still, I am cautious about double-checking this carefully before buying the hinges. How durable is the soft-close mechanism? Is it a wear part or fairly long-lasting?

How long does the soft-close mechanism last? The soft-close systems from Hettich and Blum are generally very durable and reliable. They can easily withstand daily use for many years. If wear does occur, the soft-close component can usually be retrofitted or replaced individually without having to change the entire hinge. This is a significant advantage compared to cheaper alternatives.
In summary, here’s what I’ve found:
- Blum hinges are high quality, featuring fine-adjustable 3D alignment
- Hettich Sensys offers convenient soft-closing functionality
- Both can usually be installed using the original drill holes from the BILLY
- Be careful with the door cutouts; they need to be large enough
If anyone knows of a good alternative, please share. It’s important to me that the hinges are durable and easy to install.
