Hello everyone,

I have an older IKEA Billy bookcase that I would like to update visually. Specifically, I want to replace the fronts (door and drawer fronts). My question is: Are there any sources outside of IKEA—meaning manufacturers or retailers—that offer high-quality and well-fitting fronts for the Billy system?

I am aware that IKEA itself supplies replacement parts, but often these are either no longer available or offered in very limited styles. Therefore, I am looking for alternative sources—ideally with more modern designs or different materials.

Does anyone have experience with third-party suppliers or maybe even tips for DIY solutions? I look forward to your recommendations and advice on where to find such fronts or what options exist.

Hello,

In general, IKEA offers only limited options for replacing BILLY fronts. Official replacement fronts are usually available only for current series models. For older versions, there is a high risk that suitable doors are no longer being produced.

Alternatively, some specialized small furniture manufacturers provide custom-made wood or MDF fronts on request. Prices are often higher than those at IKEA. It is worth researching local craftsmen or online shops for furniture parts.

Note: The fit from third-party suppliers can vary. Be sure to take precise measurements beforehand and compare carefully.

Hello Karma0,

I want to go into some detail here because replacing BILLY cabinet fronts can actually be a bit more complex than you might think.

1. Take exact measurements: BILLY shelves vary in depth, height, and especially the doors have different cabinet mounting systems. There can be small variations between different production years.

2. Material selection: The original fronts are either melamine-coated or painted, which is important for replicas to match the appearance and protect the surface against scratches, moisture, etc.

3. Sources:
- Small carpentry shops often offer custom furniture services, where you can provide your measurements and get fronts made from various materials (MDF, plywood). Prices for simple doors start at around 50 euros per door.
- Online platforms like "DIY Fronts" or "Second Hand Möbelfronten" on Etsy can also be useful.

4. DIY: This requires some tools and experience in cutting and surface finishing.

5. Mounting and hinges: You should carefully check whether the hinges are compatible with the standard fixtures or if new hinges are needed.

One more question: What version and dimensions does your BILLY have? That would make it easier to find suitable fronts.

Thank you for the detailed information! My shelf is the classic version, 80x202 cm (width x height) in white, with two doors. The depth is 28 cm (11 inches). The fronts are made of white-coated particleboard with a framed appearance.

It is a model that is about 7 years old. The original fronts from IKEA are currently no longer in stock.

Your notes on the hinges and material selection are already helpful to me.

Answer to the question about sources:

Besides IKEA, there are suppliers like "Moebelplus" or "Möbelwerkstatt24" that offer custom-made doors and fronts. You can choose options for color and finish. Prices are higher than at IKEA but address the supply issue for older furniture precisely.

Additionally, some specialty wood stores offer doors in standard sizes that can be adjusted with some modifications (e.g., drilling new hole rows) to fit BILLY.

Important: When ordering, always consider installation tolerances, otherwise there may be discrepancies in fitting accuracy.

If it’s just about refreshing the look, you can also apply foil fronts yourself.

They come in many designs and are cheaper than replacing entire fronts.
