Hello everyone,

I have a Billy bookshelf from IKEA that has been making quite an annoying squeaking noise when opening the doors for some time now. The sound occurs especially when the doors are not fully aligned or when I open them quickly. The hinges seem to be intact, and there is no visible rust, but the bookshelf is already several years old.

Does anyone have experience with what exactly causes this squeaking? Is it usually due to the hinge, the plastic bushings, or moisture? And most importantly: what medium- to long-term solutions are available to permanently fix the squeaking? I would prefer not to replace the hinges completely, but rather try maintenance or care first.

I would really appreciate any tips!

Hello makin,

First of all: Your problem is typical and unfortunately very common with Billy shelving units. The squeaking when opening usually results from insufficient lubrication of the hinges or minor wear on the plastic bushings that guide the hinge.

Here is a small guide on how you can proceed:

1. Cleaning: Remove dust and dirt from the hinges, preferably with a damp cloth or a brush. Dirt can cause additional abrasion.

2. Lubrication: Use a silicone-based lubricant (not oil, as oil attracts dust). A spray works well because it can reach difficult spots.

3. Check the screws: Sometimes the screws are slightly loose and cause squeaking through slight movement. Tightening helps here.

4. For more severe wear: Replace the plastic bushings. This takes some effort but is usually easy with IKEA furniture since the parts are generally standardized.

For testing after lubrication: Open and close the door at least ten times to allow the lubricant to spread well.

Good luck!

I am not entirely convinced that lubrication is always the cause.

What if it is simply the material itself, which has become stiff due to aging or even shows slight cracks in the plastic? In that case, lubrication won’t provide a lasting solution, and it would be necessary to check more closely whether the issue might be related to the material.

Also: What is the indoor climate like where you are? High humidity can be a factor – wood reacts by expanding or contracting, which creates stresses that manifest as noises. Recommending lubricants as a cure-all seems too simplistic to me.

Thank you first of all for your feedback!

Regarding the indoor climate: the room is not humid; I actually have rather dry air and no direct sunlight on the shelf.

Therefore, I hope the issue might be related to the plastic bushings. They seem a bit brittle to me – maybe the screw threads are affected as well?

Gafiel, you have often posted very detailed guides here on the forum – what is your assessment in this case, and what tools or materials would I need to replace the bushings? Is it very complicated with the basic models of Billy?

Hello makin,

As mentioned before, squeaky hinges are often caused by a combination of wear, lack of lubrication, and possibly material fatigue. Although the hinges on Billy shelves are quite sturdy, over time the plastic bushings inside the hinges can become brittle and cause the parts to no longer move smoothly.

Here is a detailed step-by-step guide if you want to replace the bushings:

1. Prepare your tools: You will ideally need a small Phillips screwdriver, possibly needle-nose pliers, and new bushings which you may find at IKEA or hardware stores.

2. Remove the cabinet door: Billy doors can usually be removed by slightly lifting and pulling – you don’t usually need to fully unscrew the hinges. Be careful to support the doors well!

3. Remove the screws: Loosen the screws that connect the hinge to the shelf.

4. Remove the bushings: Sometimes the bushings are just pressed in, less often fastened with screws. You can use small pointed pliers here. If the bushings are damaged (cracks, chips), they need to be replaced.

5. Insert new bushings: The exact replacement parts are available from IKEA or as compatible plastic bushings.

6. Lubricate: Before reassembling, I recommend applying a light silicone spray on the hinge and bushings to ensure smooth movement.

7. Reassemble and adjust.

Note: There are variations of the Billy model, and not all hinges are the same. Before removal, check if the screws are tight – you might want to spray some WD-40 on the threads for easier loosening.

If you like, I can provide more detailed tips later, including recommendations for spare parts you might need.

The important thing is to proceed carefully to avoid any damage.

Hello makin,

I understand well how such a noise can be really annoying. A few years ago, when I tried to fix my Billy shelf myself, I had the same thoughts as you. For me, the biggest challenge was not to panic immediately, thinking the shelf was going to break.

My solution back then: I applied a special Teflon spray several times, which is a bit less greasy than silicone and attracts less dirt. After that, the squeaking was much less, but not completely gone. After a few weeks, I actually replaced the bushings, which was surprisingly easy.

Maybe something you could try too: First clean thoroughly, then gently lubricate with silicone or Teflon and observe.

Good luck!
