Hello everyone,

I recently got a Billy bookcase and am now considering whether I can combine individual parts of it with other IKEA furniture. The idea is to use, for example, individual shelves or side panels from the Billy bookcase in systems like the Kallax or other shelving units to create a custom solution. My main focus is on flexibility and design.

Has anyone had experience with whether this mechanically works well and if it makes sense to combine Billy components with other IKEA furniture systems? Are there any issues with assembly or stability? What possibilities do you generally see, especially regarding the appearance?

I would really appreciate any tips, suggestions, or experiences!

This topic sometimes comes up for me as well, since I have tried connecting Billy elements with my Kallax shelf unit. To be honest, I was a bit unsure if it would be stable, but with the right screws, it worked surprisingly well.

However, I found it a bit tricky at times to get the measurements exactly right, because Billy is somewhat narrower than other series. In the end, though, it created a customized look that I like.

If you’re unsure, I recommend starting by experimenting with small parts and definitely checking that the connection is secure. Good luck!

Combining Billy shelving units with other IKEA systems is generally possible, but there are important technical factors to consider:

1. Dimensions: Billy shelves are 40 cm deep (15.7 inches), while other systems like Kallax or Expedit are 33 cm deep (13 inches). This causes visual and functional differences.

2. Fastening: Billy uses dowels, screws, and metal brackets of specific thickness and positions, which are not identical in other furniture. Connection points may need to be adjusted.

3. Material: The thickness of the panels, the finish, and the carcass construction differ, which can lead to instability or gaps when combined.

4. Stability: Billy units are primarily designed as standalone modules; when combining, additional reinforcements should be planned.

Conclusion: Combining is feasible but requires modifications. A precise plan and measuring of the respective furniture parts are necessary.

I just did this myself and am really happy with the result! 🙂 Putting Billy and Kallax together might sound complicated at first, but it’s not if you get a bit creative.

For example, I used the shelves from my Billy shelf unit in a custom-built frame to create a drawer combination – it looked really stylish! This works great if you don’t want to connect the furniture exactly as is, but rather focus on the individual components.

One tip: Screws from a hardware store can help if the original fasteners don’t fit. And very important: don’t tighten them too much, or the material may split.

Billy shelves do not mechanically fit directly into other IKEA systems. The dimensions and screw positions are different.

Anyone who wants to do this anyway must expect to make custom adjustments or use additional brackets.

In short: No, Billy does not fit into other IKEA systems without modifications.

However, some users rely on custom-made adapters or screw modifications. Make sure to ensure stability!
