Hello everyone,
I am planning to get a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and assemble it myself. Since I am not very experienced with DIY projects, I would like to get some tips or advice beforehand on what to pay special attention to during the assembly.
I am particularly interested in whether there are common mistakes or pitfalls to watch out for, and if there are any helpful tricks that can make the assembly easier or improve the process. It would also be useful to know if I should have specific tools ready that could facilitate the work, and if there are different models that require different assembly steps.
Who here has experience with the Billy bookshelf and can share some recommendations? Thanks in advance!

I placed small washers under the feet back then to level it out.Exactly that! Small measures often work wonders. And don’t hesitate to spend a few extra minutes checking things the first time around. It saves a lot of stress and frustration.

When using the cordless screwdriver, set the torque low to avoid damaging the wood. Thanks for the crucial tip! I had no idea which setting to choose. I will do it that way.
I have two more questions:
First, how reliable is the fit of the prefabricated parts? Do I need to do any reworking on the drill holes or edges, or does everything usually fit well with the Billy series?
Second, is it worth buying IKEA accessories like extra shelves or doors directly, or are there cheaper, compatible alternatives from other sources?

How reliable is the fit accuracy of the prefabricated parts? The fit accuracy of IKEA products is generally very good for furniture in this price range. Rework is rarely necessary unless you have a returned item or a defective piece. Still, before assembly, make sure to check all holes for clean drilling patterns, and pay attention to adjustments if the floor is very uneven.

Is it worth buying accessories from IKEA or other sources? If you want to be on the safe side, IKEA accessories are recommended. The parts are precisely matched to the shelving unit, especially when it comes to doors and special shelves. Other sources can be cheaper, but they often lack exact dimensions or hole positions, which can lead to frustration.
