Hello everyone,

I am planning to get a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and assemble it myself. Since I am not very experienced with DIY projects, I would like to get some tips or advice beforehand on what to pay special attention to during the assembly.

I am particularly interested in whether there are common mistakes or pitfalls to watch out for, and if there are any helpful tricks that can make the assembly easier or improve the process. It would also be useful to know if I should have specific tools ready that could facilitate the work, and if there are different models that require different assembly steps.

Who here has experience with the Billy bookshelf and can share some recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Thanks to everyone for your helpful responses so far. I have taken note of the advice regarding tools, stabilization, and installation, and I already feel more confident.

One last thing is still on my mind: How do you handle wall mounting? Is there a general standard spacing for the mounting points on the wall, and how do you measure it correctly to ensure the shelf is neither crooked nor loosely attached? Does the wall material also play a role? I would like to clarify this before purchasing the appropriate wall anchors.

The shelf should be mounted at the top of the wall, ideally using the included angle brackets. The spacing depends on the mounting holes in the side panels – these are usually predetermined.

For drywall, be sure to use special cavity anchors; for concrete or brick walls, use standard heavy-duty anchors. Important: Check what is behind the wall before drilling.

Exactly.

Most of it depends on the screws being properly tightened. The shelf won’t be crooked if you use a spirit level carefully before securing it. And if the wall plugs are appropriate for the wall type, the mounting will be secure.

A practical tip: Have a second person hold the shelf while you mark the drill holes. This way, nothing goes wrong, and mounting it works much better. Then simply tighten firmly, but do not overtighten the wall plugs! Good luck 🙂
