Hello everyone, I recently bought a Billy bookcase and would like to know: What assembly strategies do you recommend for beginners to make the process as easy, stable, and error-free as possible? I am especially interested in how to best use the instructions, which tools are truly necessary, and if there are any tricks for handling hard-to-reach spots. It would also be great to get tips on how to securely mount the bookcase to the wall at the end to prevent accidents. Thanks in advance for your help!

So why all the wall discussion? To me, it’s unnecessary extra workI understand your point, but from experience and for insurance reasons, a fixed installation is usually recommended. Even small accidents can cause big problems if a shelf falls.
Similarly, I would advise daphne62 to do it right from the start – this saves a lot of stress later on.
Hello daphne62, I’d like to give you a detailed step-by-step guide for the assembly, as this is often overlooked:
1. Sort all the parts and check that nothing is missing.
2. Cover the work surface with a blanket or towel to prevent scratches.
3. Start with the back panel, as it greatly stabilizes the shelf.
4. Use the hammer carefully when driving in the nails for the back panel.
5. Always tighten screws by hand only after all parts are assembled.
6. When fixing to the wall, make sure to place the bracket in the center.
7. Use the appropriate anchors for each wall type (drywall/plasterboard, concrete, brick).
Especially important: Read the instructions, even if they seem dry! Many errors happen when this step is skipped.

One more note about wall mounting:
It is important to know your wall type precisely before selecting anchors and screws. For hollow walls, you should use special toggle anchors that grip inside the wall cavity. For concrete or brick, simply use appropriate expansion anchors.
I also recommend marking the screw holes in advance and pre-drilling with a small drill bit – this makes screwing in much easier and protects the wall.
If you like, I can send you a checklist of the most common wall types and suitable materials – this will make the installation more confident and secure.

Thank you very much for your detailed responses! I especially found the advice on wall mounting and the tools very helpful. For the exact wall structure, I can probably specify drywall as the basis, as we live in a typical new build.
Could someone perhaps give tips on the best way to install the shelves? Some of them seem to have different load capacities, and I want to avoid any unnecessary mistakes, especially when placing the shelf boards.

In response to your question:
The shelves of the Billy unit are designed to support the same load by default, as long as the metal pins intended for this purpose are correctly inserted.
Make sure the pins are placed exactly at the height you want and check that the shelves rest evenly.
If you want to place heavy objects on them, it is advisable to position the shelves above the middle rail or in the lower section – this is where the stability is greatest.

One more tip that is easily overlooked: the metal pins for the shelves have a small notch on one side.
This notch should face outward to fit into the designated holes in the side panels. If they are inserted incorrectly, the entire shelf will wobble!
And don’t stress, you’ll get it! 🙂
