Hello everyone, a few days ago I mounted my Billy shelf to the wall, using all the supplied plugs and screws, and made sure the wall mounting was installed correctly. However, the shelf still wobbles noticeably, especially when I make slight movements on the top shelf board or open the door. It doesn’t seem to be the wood itself, which is stable, and the screws are tight. The mounting points are fixed into solid spots in the wall (concrete).

Does anyone have an idea why the shelf might wobble despite a solid wall fixing? Are there common installation mistakes I might have overlooked, or is this possibly normal for this model? I’m looking forward to your assessments and especially practical solutions.

The most common reasons for a wobbly Billy shelf, even when attached to the wall, are either an insufficient number of screws or incorrect placement, or an uneven wall. Even if the screws are fixed into concrete, the anchor may not be deep enough or suitable for the load.

You should check that all screws are tightened securely and not only hold firmly in the wall but also pull tightly within the shelf itself. It is also important to fasten the shelf as close as possible to the corners to minimize leverage.

Check if the shelf is completely flat on the floor. Even a minimal gap underneath can cause movement. The wall-mounted brackets must also be perfectly aligned and level.

In general, I recommend the following:

1. Check the floor support: Even a small unevenness can cause rocking movements. You might consider placing small felt or rubber pads under the shelf feet to create a more stable contact.

2. Inspect wall fixings: Are your wall plugs properly sized? For concrete walls, there are special nylon or metal anchors with high load capacity.

3. Number and position of fixing points: The Billy shelf usually has two to three screw points per side. Are all of them installed? Missing one can already cause movement.

4. Connection of shelf parts: Are all connections between the individual shelf modules tight? Sometimes the shelves expand slightly due to temperature changes and become loose.

In summary: Movement often results from a combination of floor contact and suboptimal wall fixing.

I understand your frustration! A wobbly shelf is really annoying, especially when you’ve put in the effort and thought everything was installed correctly. In my case, I had screwed the screws in too loosely because I was afraid of damaging the wood – which of course was wrong. I kept having a slight wobble until I tightened the screws properly. Maybe this helps as a small hint. 🙂

In addition to the points mentioned, it is important that the wall mounting is not only strong on its own but also properly distributed. This means that for larger shelves or those holding heavy weight, the load should be spread across multiple anchors, ideally at the top and bottom.

Also, check if the shelf might be slightly twisted against the wall surface, which can happen due to uneven walls. This causes stress that can lead to wobbling.
