Hello everyone, I have a Billy bookcase from IKEA at home that still wobbles despite being fastened to the wall multiple times. I have securely mounted the shelf to the wall using the original angle brackets, fixing it in at least three places. All screws are tight, and the wall plugs are suitable for the wall material (concrete). Still, I notice some wobbling even with light pressure and during normal use. The wall is even, and I followed the assembly instructions step by step.

My question is: Why does my Billy bookcase wobble despite multiple wall fixings? Where could the problem be if all fastenings appear to be correctly installed and the wall seems stable? I look forward to your assessments and possible solutions!

Interesting question, but I would like to know if you have checked whether the shelf itself might be warped or bent.

However, that is rather subjective. Have you matched the type of anchors precisely to the wall material? Some concrete anchors require specific screws, and even a slight mismatch can cause some play.

As an addition: Even if the wall is stable, the material of the shelf itself can play a role. BILLY shelves are made of particleboard, which can expand or contract slightly with moisture or temperature changes. If the shelf is not perfectly vertical or if the wall is not completely flat, this can cause wobbling despite secure mounting.

Also: Have you checked whether all screws are fully tightened? Sometimes they feel tight but are not screwed in completely.

Oh, I know that! I had installed the BILLY myself, and it did wobble a bit until I leveled the shelf and tightened all the screws again. After that, it was rock solid! Maybe just double-check everything carefully and tighten it again ;-)

Check the mounting brackets. Some only come with one screw per hole, but two are better if the shelf will carry a heavier load.

Also, make sure whether the shelf rests on the floor at the base or is actually only hanging on the wall.

Wobbling can also come from the floor. If the shelf does not have a stable base at the bottom, the stability depends solely on the wall fixings, which cannot fully compensate without contact with the floor.
