Hello everyone, I recently bought a Billy bookcase and would like to know: What assembly strategies do you recommend for beginners to make the process as easy, stable, and error-free as possible? I am especially interested in how to best use the instructions, which tools are truly necessary, and if there are any tricks for handling hard-to-reach spots. It would also be great to get tips on how to securely mount the bookcase to the wall at the end to prevent accidents. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello daphne62, your question is very well formulated! For assembling a Billy shelf, I recommend first carefully checking all the individual parts and comparing them with the instruction manual before you start. Tools like a Phillips screwdriver and a rubber mallet are usually all you need.

Make sure the small dowels and screws are properly positioned, otherwise the shelf will be unstable.

When mounting it to the wall, be sure to use the supplied bracket and suitable wall anchors for your wall type – for example, ones designed for concrete, plaster, or drywall. Safety comes first!

Hey daphne62, I think the most important thing when assembling the Billy is to take your time and proceed step by step. 😊

Sure, sometimes you might think, “I can manage this without the instructions!” but there’s more to it than you realize. Usually, following the steps also saves you stress and rework.

Oh, and always keep the screws loose until everything is in place—only tighten them properly once everything is assembled! That way, everything fits perfectly. 😉

Tools: screwdriver, hammer. Lay out all parts and read the instructions. Screw in screws only hand-tight. Secure the shelf to the wall. Done.

I have to disagree here. I have assembled the Billy several times completely without wall fixing – and with proper loading, nothing happens. So why all the fuss about wall mounting? For me, it’s unnecessary extra work that only causes unnecessary worry.

Hello matthewon, I see your point, but especially for families with children or for shelves placed in awkward spots, securing them to the wall is a real safety advantage.

I believe it’s better to play it safe and use wall anchors, even if it requires a bit of extra effort at first. You simply feel more secure afterward, especially when there are multiple people in the home.
