Hello everyone, I have been experiencing an issue for some time now where the drawer of my Billy shelving unit is very difficult and stiff to pull out. The shelving unit itself is still relatively new, and I haven’t overloaded it or installed it incorrectly. I am mainly interested in which causes are typically responsible for a stiff-running BILLY drawer system—for example, whether it could be due to the runners themselves, alignment issues, or even material deformation. At the same time, I would like to know how to fix the problem using simple methods, without having to completely take the drawer apart or order replacement parts. Maybe someone here has had similar experiences or knows common weak points to check. I look forward to constructive tips and explanations!

Often, the issue is caused by dirty or misaligned drawer slides. Check if the drawer runners are properly aligned and free of any debris.

Also check if the screws on the drawer slides are tight. If they are loose, opening the drawers can be difficult.

Thanks, that’s a good starting point! I haven’t inspected the slides closely yet, but the shelf is located in a relatively dust-free room. Still, I’ll take a close look at them this evening.

I will do that. When assembling, I already felt the screws were secure, but maybe they’ve loosened over time with use.

I know the feeling when a drawer just doesn’t work properly – it can be really frustrating. For me, the issue was a slight deformation in the wood of the drawer. It was really hard to notice, but after some sanding, it ran much more smoothly again. Maybe this will help you too.

It is important to proceed systematically at first:
1. Check if the drawer slides are mounted parallel and correctly.
2. Test whether the drawer sticks at any point when pulled out.
3. Feel for any areas where the wood rubs or has swollen.
If the shelf is located in a more humid room, wood swelling might be the cause; in this case, lightly sanding the affected surfaces usually helps.
