Hello everyone, I have an issue with my Billy shelf where some screws keep loosening over time. Although the shelf usually stays in one place, frequent opening of the doors and the weight of the books seem to cause the screws to gradually come loose. I’m very interested in knowing what repair options are available to permanently secure these loosening screws on the BILLY shelf. Are there proven methods or materials that specifically work with this IKEA furniture without compromising its stability or damaging the wood? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Regarding thread-locking compounds for wood: Thread-locking adhesives are primarily designed for metal fasteners. Their effectiveness in wood is limited because the wood material itself is often the main concern, not the screw. If a screw becomes loose in a wood hole, it is usually due to fiber damage. I would recommend using mechanical solutions such as wooden dowels or wood fillers rather than chemical thread-locking agents. The latter can also make disassembly more difficult.

In my opinion, such repair kits are often overrated. It might be worth considering whether Billy, as a budget piece of furniture, is even designed for a long-term repair like this. Why not simply convert the screw connections to an alternative method? For example, by adding small metal brackets inside, which provide additional stability.

That is indeed a valid suggestion. Reinforcing the mechanical connection with brackets or additional clamps can significantly increase load capacity. In practical tests, careful alignment and the use of appropriate screws should be ensured to avoid damage to the wood.

That actually sounds interesting. What type of brackets would you recommend, and how exactly should they be attached to avoid affecting the typical BILLY construction? I’m asking because I want to keep the shelf as original as possible, but improve its durability.

I use small metal brackets with countersunk screws and suitable anchors. The brackets are attached on the inside of the shelves and side panels. Make sure the screws are not too long, otherwise they may penetrate through the board.

Hey noomigi 🙂 I also used metal brackets for that, and I rubbed the screws briefly with wax before inserting them. This way they hold firmer but can still be loosened if you want to rearrange later 😉

Otherwise, the idea of using threadlocker seems too strong to me – too tight and somehow not ideal for wooden furniture, as already mentioned. I prefer the screws to hold but still have a bit of ‘give,’ especially with wooden furniture, which can move slightly.
