Good morning everyone, I have often noticed that the screws in my Billy shelves become loose over time and sometimes even wear out completely. This issue seems to increase especially when the shelves are reassembled or adjusted differently, which is quite frustrating because it affects the stability. My question to you is: What can I specifically do to prevent the screws in Billy shelves from wearing out over time? Are there any special screwing techniques, additional materials, or other tips you would recommend? I am looking forward to well-informed advice or first-hand experiences so I can keep the shelves sturdy in the long run.
I can easily understand how frustrating it is when the screws loosen in a piece of furniture that’s supposed to stand securely. Especially with Billy shelves, which are often reassembled, constantly readjusting can be annoying. From my experience: be patient during assembly and pay attention to the quality of the screws – you can tell when cheap screws are already soft. Sometimes it also helps to just tighten the shelf slightly with a manual screwdriver instead of using a cordless drill at full power.

Often, cheaper screws do not fit precisely into the pre-drilled wood, which increases the likelihood of loosening. If you need replacements, use screws with the same diameter, length, and thread type.

whether the wood glue stabilizes the screws themselves or rather reinforces the area around the hole? That's exactly right, the glue makes the wood around the hole stronger! 🙂 And don’t worry about rebuilding later; you can still do that. Often, the screw threads won't be damaged in the glue-hardened wood, which is really great.M
Matthewt486 Aug 2022 07:25For those who haven’t tried it yet: You can wrap a small strip of Teflon tape around the screw holes before screwing in. This increases grip and prevents abrasion of the wood. It also helps to place the shelf on a soft surface during assembly to avoid unnecessary damage to the wood.
