Hello everyone, I have an issue with my Billy shelf where some screws keep loosening over time. Although the shelf usually stays in one place, frequent opening of the doors and the weight of the books seem to cause the screws to gradually come loose. I’m very interested in knowing what repair options are available to permanently secure these loosening screws on the BILLY shelf. Are there proven methods or materials that specifically work with this IKEA furniture without compromising its stability or damaging the wood? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello, I would recommend replacing the hex socket screws with ones that have plastic washers. The washers prevent loosening due to vibration.

To address loosening screws in BILLY shelves, it is advisable to first check the material around the screw hole. Often, the connection loosens due to damage to the wood fibers caused by repeated screwing and unscrewing.

A proven method is to use wooden dowels or screws with a larger diameter combined with wood glue to reinforce the connection. Alternatively, wrapping the screw thread with plastic thread tape (Teflon tape) can also help improve the fit.

I have had good results when applying wood glue into the hole and then immediately tightening the screw. This holds securely for months.

A more durable solution for loose screws in BILLY shelves are so-called wood repair kits. These kits use small fillers, usually made of polyester or epoxy resin, which are applied into the damaged hole and then harden. After curing, new screws can be inserted that hold much better.

It is important that the material fully dries and is not subjected to stress immediately in order to ensure maximum strength.

Thanks for the feedback so far! I’m curious: how do you assess the usability of thread lockers (such as thread locker paint or Loctite) on wood joints? I’ve often heard that these are mainly used for metal connections, but is it possible to use them in a piece of furniture like BILLY without damaging the wood or preventing the screw from being removed later?
